Romney's Gracious Good-bye

What now?

This election is about twists and turns and which way the wind blows. Gov. Romney pulled out all of the stops to get every vote he could. He certainly showed amazing class with his suspension speech and I am sure that he won tremendous respect from all who have heard and will hear it.

Now is not the time to ask “what if...” Now is the time to ask “what now?”.

Let’s take a fresh look at the differences between the remaining candidates. Romney still has tremendous leverage in this race. If he hears and sees the right things from McCain or Huckabee (or even Paul in fairness to him), he might want to persuade his delegates to throw in behind any one of them.

There should be another debate among the remaining candidates. There should also be a fresh look at where each candidate stands on the issues such that remaining primaries and caucuses can move forward.

What now?

I would guess that if there is any releasing of his delegates to another candidate it would probably be to McCain. The very personal animosity shown by Huckabee towards Romney has been even more blatant than the hatred of McCain to Romney. Huckabee's people (whether directed by him or not they were still working towards his nomination) played a lot of dirty games when it came to Romney's religion. It was also Huckabee who split the conservative vote preventing Romney from winning. Huckabee never really spoke ill of McCain while unceasingly going after Romney - in a very personal way. My hunch, though, is that Romney's delegates will be free to choose who they want to support without an official endorsement.
