Is Socialism More Christian?

Dan, I agree with so much of what you've written in the last few blogs. I'll clarify again that I'm incredibly grateful to live in a capitalist country and, ideally, take a libertarian stance on most issues.

The problem I have, mostly internally, is that while I agree with all of these things, people are hurting. Please understand I am not advocating a complete "vote-for-everything-liberal" approach, just that I see merits on both sides. I don't know what the answer is, but I do know that there is a problem with health care, and I know that I am very grateful to have my son insured by socialist medicaid.

I know that a major problem with socialist health care is the abuse that would most likely take place by the people that wouldn't give it any value. I don't know what the solution is, but I know there is a problem.

And as far as health care being a right...I don't know what I would call it. But I do think it is incredibly unfortunate when a person, young or old, can't receive the medical care they need without going into ridiculous debt.

What do we do about this?

freedom does not mean security

Freedom and does not necessarily go hand-in-hand with security and comfort. I believe there is actually MORE comfort in slavery.

When the Hebrew people were released from bondage in Egypt, they began to complain almost right away. The wilderness of freedom was wild and dangerous. It was unsure and only gave the certainty of peril. The people wanted to go back to Egypt where their everyday needs were being met. In Exodus 16:3 the people said, "Would that we had died by the LORD'S hand in the land of Egypt, WHEN WE SAT BY THE POTS OF MEAT, WHEN WE ATE BREAD TO THE FULL; for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

While in slavery their needs were met. They had plenty of food and ate their fill. Their future was secure. They knew exactly what tomorrow held.

Freedom is not like that. The future is not secure. We do not know what tomorrow holds or what to expect. Freedom may bring the greatest dangers but it can also bring the greatest victories; the greatest sadness but also the greatest joy.

As far as the specific problem of health care, I do not have a specific answer. I believe the high costs are because of government interference. If our checks were not taxed so much so as to pay for the health care and welfare of other people we would probably have enough to pay for our own. But it is an uncertain future if we go down that trail.

The question that needs to be asked is, What are we willing to pay to live in freedom? Is freedom worth the cost? Each of us can only answer that for ourselves.
