Everything you didn't hear about the Auto Bailout!

This is a UAW

bail out, not an auto bail out.

idea

Here's an idea. Feel free to react violently. GM drops their entire current line of new cars and ONLY focuses on "green" automobiles. Not b/c I'm a hippy and am green myself, but looking forward, with the Obama crew sworn in, there may be incentives given to automakers to produce greener cars. So, why not continue to service and provide parts to existing GM cars (known and guaranteed revenue stream), but from a new car perspective, drop all your current models, and focus and specialize in green. Lots of models to choose from. Picture this, in 5-7 years, if someone in the country wants a green car, they INSTANTLY think GM. The cars they offer actually have some real power, look stylish, and b/c of their new focus, blow away any half-@ss attempt by any other automaker who is trying to merely supplement their current new car offering with some odd-looking, underpowered green car option. What if they reintroduce the old body styles that made them successful? MOPARS that are actually green. You capture the consumer base that bought and stayed loyal to GM after their quality peak based on the idea that you've got a green car that has the body of a '68 camaro? If you're already broke, why not ride the wave, shake it up, and get some free money from the government? Makes Obama look good - saving a major US manufacturer while making the country greener in the process all for a couple billion. What a bargain.

Not sure that's a great idea

The problem is no one wants these green cars yet. As soon as gas dropped, people started buying SUV's again. True story can't make this up.
An article was written that "American's just don't learn" talking about how they buy these cars. I think the government didn't get it. People don't want to buy them or at a minimum they aren't buying them yet for some reason. So GM would basically be on welfare until that problem was solved. But as long as that only costs a few billion dollars, I'm sure they won't see anything wrong with it.
Here's an Idea. How about the government buys 30 billion in Green cars and gives them to the middle class. Then the cars would be on the road where they want them. Or better yet, use the 30 Billion as a tax rebate of say 10K per family that buys a new green car. You'd have tons of them on the road.
