Fixing Social Security

Yesterday the Senate recognized that there are low income seniors. In fact, 25% of senior women live in poverty on monthly social security checks of $500 or less. Seventy years after FDR devised the program to insure agaionst poverty in old age, Social Security supports a huge bureaucracy and high taxes that have never achieved its primary purpose. Most reform plans just look for ways to perpetuate this leviathon. Ironically, if we would go back to insurance against poverty, we could slash the bureaucracy and the taxes, too. but the government shoul;d stop pretending it is an insurance company and buy policies that are backed up with reserves based on sound actuarials.
