"He must have lied" is not "He lied"

This was an excellent blog, and I agree with everything mentioned here except that I have a problem with categorically saying someone lied simply because "he must have known" something. This is how President Bush is accused of lying about weapons of mass destruction - because "as president he must have known there were none." I prefer to give someone the benefit of the doubt unless there is already a history with that person lying or otherwise being unethical (which is usually true of politicians).

I agree about giving the benefit of the doubt. That's what I was trying to do when I suggested ways in which Warren man have rationalized in his mind. Warren has sinced admitted that ten minutes before the event he knew McCain had not arrived yet.
