Is Tithing Really Biblical?

Savior fulfilled the Law

He didn't eliminate the components of the law. None of the commandments became optional. He added that we are to love one another and to take His gospel to all nations. The parables and beatitudes help us to live the spirit and not just the letter of His laws.

I opened my King James Bible to Malachi 3:8-12 where Malachi reminds the people in his day to not rob God in their tithes and offerings. Good counsel for our days. We are to take care of the poor among us and our tithes and offerings can be used that way. They are in the LDS faith. Our monthly fast offerings where we abstain from 2 meals and give the value of that food as a fast offering are directly used for the local poor (unemployed, sick, etc.) and any surplus is sent to Salt Lake for larger needs such as emergency food or humanitarian aid.

Back to Malachi, he promises by quoting the Lord of Hosts (v. 10) "...if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it." And verses 11 and 12 continue with a list of other promises - all good reasons for me to live the law of tithing.

I can tell you from a lifelong pattern of tithing my income (whether great or small) was always enough to meet the needs of my family.

If tithing goes to a preacher as you say, then I might be suspicious of why that principle is being stressed. My husband served as an LDS Bishop for over 6 years. Not one cent of LDS tithing goes to such local leaders. The money is used to build chapels, temples, pay utilities and maintenance, etc., all around the world.

The Savior commended the widow who gave her mite (her entire monies) versus the attitude of those rich men who gave offerings in the temple to be seen of men.

Yes, I believe tithing is Biblical.

I agree with Wise Woman....

...and I refer to the passage in Malachi as well.
God is not only expressing His displeasure at the lack of tithe, He is pleading with His people to realize that withholding the tithe forces Him to withhold the bounty He so longs to give us.
I have tithed 10% for years, and not only have I never had to worry about finances since I began doing so, I would now say I am comfortable, even in the face of $4 gas and economic uncertainty. I certainly believe tithing is biblical...!
Praise God....
