An unarmed populace is at the mercy of ANYONE in power. Does not matter party, ideology or whatever.

Whether or not I persoally own a gun is not germaine. Unless we are diligent and wise, we will be unarmed and at the mercy of whoever happens to be in control at the time. One would think even liberals would cringe at that idea.

You're right, everyone should be concerned about losing our gun rights. Every genocidal dictator in history has banned private gun ownership before massacring the undesirables.

No it isn't. We have changed from a society that relied on brute force to a society that relies on law. Is it possible that that change? Yes. But isn't that way now.

I’m not talking about brute force. I’m talking about citizens having the right to protect themselves. A police presence only works where police are present. Armed citizens, or the possibility of armed citizens keeps a lot more people honest than police do.

In an ideal world you would be correct. But even civil societies are filled with those who are power hungry and seek to control others lives. Party, ideology, etc it does not matter. We are humanoids, not robots.

Good Post JM! Don't any of you think that they're trying to grab our guns for anything knoble. They know they can never make us subservient while we have the Second Amendment. So they will try to systematically strip away our rights a piece at a time. We can't give an inch!

The ONLY reason we have a civil society as you put it, is because we have the Second Amendment. If you haven't watch with horror what has happened in the UK over the last few years where people are getting 30 years for shooting a burglar in there house and the burglar is suing them and winning. It's sick! That's what will happen here if we give an inch. That's phase one. I can tell you have no problem being a slave to the government, But I do!

Then I would ask those in law enforcement the same question. Do they want everyone they must confront to be armed?

Then I would answer you, Yes. I used to be with the local County Sheriff, since then, I've been in law enforcement in the private sector. All of my friends in law enforcement think the same way.

You see we understand that most people are responsible, law-abiding citizens. We don't believe that all citizens should have unjust punishment inflicted upon them because of the actions of the few. If I get into a confrontation, armed citizens would come to my aid, i've seen it before. But that aside, armed citizens make our job easier. Statistical facts show that there is less crime where there is an armed citizenry.

I hate to break it to you, but the bad people that officers must confront are armed now, passing laws don't stop criminals from breaking them.

I'm sure you can find officers who would agree with you. But I would suggest that these guys are the power-hungry tyrant type, the ones you hear about in the news, the ones that abuse their authority.

I'm sure the guys in New Orleans, the ones that went around selling protection to the local business owners and the ones that went around robbing people, after Catrina wouldn't want people to be armed. That would even the odds and cut into their business.

I would say it IS true for the most part. There are exceptions I'm sure. But most cops who don't want honest citizens to be able to defend themselves, want them defenseless in order to obtain more power.
