Licenses Are Not Rights
Licenses, including marriage licenses, are not rights. The California Supreme Court has set a dangerous precedent by forcing the people of California to change the licenses against our will. You clearly like the ends, but the means do matter and could bring about a result that you don't like sometime in the future.

Redifining
A word does not change the action of that word.
The SC of Ca was wrong, the people said they were wrong, and the Tyrants in Black Robes didn't care. They (the SC of Ca.) need to be removed from the bench, they have forgotten why they are there. It is not for judicial activism, but only to discern what the Constitution ACTUALLY says.

How sad to see....
It is indeed sad to see such religious bigotry on display here in Townhall. What the above two commentators appear not to have taken into consideration is the fact that the California Supreme Court did precisely what it was tasked with -- which is to interpret the California state consitution and to strike down legislation that violates that constitution. The court held that the prohibition of gay marriages violated the constitution, applying the highest standard of review to all forms of sexual orientatoin discrimination. Even if the voters succeed in amending the state constitution in November to outlaw gay marriages (and it seems decreasingly likely that they will succeed, based on polls taken two weeks after the handing down of the opinion), laws that discriminate against gay people will still be subject to "strict scrutiny" across the state. This aspect of the court's reasoning cannot be undone by the proposed constitutional amendment.
The bottom line is that forces of bigotry and hatred have been backhanded across the face by the California Supreme Court, which has declared (in ringing tones) that anti-gay bigotry is as unacceptable and as viciously cruel as racism, sexism, or religious bigotry. It amazes me that people who should know better as a result of their own history of discriminatory treatment (e.g. religious minorities) are so willing to take away the rights of others...
