Comment on: Views of a Transsexual Woman

A short introduction

Why?

Just wondering...and please don't take this as being mean spirtited...why is it that people who are practicing an "alternative lifestyle" feel like they have to get on a mountain and shout out to all the world about their sexual practices. Couldn't it be that none of us really care what you do behind closed doors? Why is it that homosexuals in general believe that they are due some special political and social recognition due to their sexual preferences? There is nothing about your gender confusion that makes you eligible for this special consideration...please...just be happy with who you are and find something about yourself that is truly worth shouting out to the world about.

You may be confused

I do aplogise for taking so long to respond to the “Why?” comment.

First of all, I am not practicing an alternative lifestyle. My lifestyle is the same as any other woman in this country. Are you saying that being a woman is an alternative lifestyle? Secondly, I don’t think I mentioned anything about my sexual practices and I am not going to do so. They are not yours or anyone else business. By the way, I could care less if you are a homosexual or a heterosexual; why should you care about mine?

The question about “special political and social recognition” requires a separate paragraph of its own. We live in a representative democracy which, by the way, really isn’t a democracy at all. What you need to understand is that living in a democracy isn’t just about majority rules. Living in a democracy also means ensuring that the minority is treated fairly and justly as well. Transsexuals just want the same basic rights that the majority of Americans already share. We want to be treated fairly and justly. However, that isn’t always the case. African Americans, as an example of a minority needing the protection of laws to ensure that they did not face undue discriminations, faced similar challenges.

I think your biggest confusion is in understanding the differences between transsexual and homosexual. As I stated above, I did not make any statements about my sexual orientation. Yet, you constantly kept inserting statements about sexual practices. I don’t know, maybe you are fixated on sex for some reason. However, you need to understand that sexual orientation has nothing to do with transsexualism.

I am happy with who I am. In fact, finally coming to terms with my transsexualism has meant a very positive change in my life. For the record, I am not confused about my gender; I am a woman.

You ARE confused....

..."We live in a representative democracy which, by the way, really isn’t a democracy at all. What you need to understand is that living in a democracy isn’t just about majority rules. Living in a democracy also means ensuring that the minority is treated fairly and justly as well."

We live in a Representative Republic...our Founders despised "democracy" for the sole purpose to which you rediculously tried to allude....Democracy means EXACTLY majority rules...minorities have no say in a true Democracy....by the way, a person's race is not a choice unlike being a "transsexual woman," whatever that means...

You are right Jimmy.

Jimmy, our own Government refers to our form of government as a democracy.
Here is an example: http://usinfo.state.gov/products/pubs/whatsdem/whatdm2.htm
What I meant was that we have very little direct power. We can shout as loud and as long as we can, but our elected officials can do what they please. Our only recourse is to vote them out of office after the fact. What our Founders wanted was power and control and they knew that they had to hide that from the masses that fought the American Revolution. The American Revolution was a war over power and money and the Declaration of Independence was merely a tool to justify starting the war.

You are right, a person's race, like one's gender, is not a choice. Yet, in the past millions of white Americans use race as a basis of hate and discrimination towards African Americans. That hatred was based on skin colour; the only real difference between Blacks and Whites. Blacks only wanted the same rights and privileges that Whites enjoyed and it took laws aimed at protection of a minority to give them those rights.

Close, but....

....the laws weren't enacted for "protection of a minority to give them those rights." They were enacted to free them so as to allow them the same freedoms that everyone celebrates....

I will accept that statement.

Fine Jimmy, I will accept that statement. We need to enact laws to free minorities to allow them to have the same freedoms that everyone celebrates. By the same token, we need to enact laws to free other minorities; e.g.,sexual orientation and gender identity, so those minorities are allowed the same freedoms that everyone celebrates.

No One

has ever said you are not a human being. But deciding to change your gender is your private issue, what could it possibly have to do with anything political. Have you been denied the right to vote or something? You say you want the same things in life that everyone else enjoys...so go get them. What's stopping you?

Jayhawker

Quite a few people in the Republican Party have made it an issue. Mike Adams and Keven McCullough scream about us quite a bit. Generally, they hate the idea that trans people want to go to work without fear of harrasement and assault, and to be able to live somewhere without fear of eviction.

Understanding

I believe that I understand what the author of this is getting at. I don't believe that it has anything to do with trying to shout from a mountain, but more to do with just being treated civil. If we are country that proclaims that we care about the civil rights of all individuals, it doesn't make any difference if we are refering to ones gender identification, sexual identification, race, relegion or anything else. This has everthing to do with respect of everyone who touches our lives. It would be truly correct to not be concerned about these issues if we simply get back to what the founding fathers of this country were trying to get across to us today. There would be no need to legislate conditions to protect people at all if we cared about individuals and take some time to just treat everyone with basic compassion. I would not care the least bit about a persons sex, color, relegion or sexual preference if my very ife were in their hands as long as they have the qualifications to do what is needed.
