Too often today, hero is synonomous with victim. An unmarried mother is a hero because she lives with the results of her choices. A disabled person is a hero because they are disabled. The entire language is debased today. Then there is the sports hero (also known as MVP).
No, as this article said, a hero is a person noted for feats of courage or nobility of purpose, especially one who has risked or sacrificed his or her life.
The people who died on the planes that crashed into the towers were not heroes. The firemen who risked and lost their lives were.

People who actually
deserve it...I am always bothered when as you say, the word hero is so misused.
You have used it well. Thank you.

Excellent definition
These are men and women who run toward danger, rather than away. Whether police officer, fireman, soldier, salior, airman, or marine, or anyone else who would give their life that others may live; these are people who conquer the natural response in favor of the irregular and so earn the moniker, "hero".

I think it's part of the
self-esteem push these days. Someone might feel left out if they're not a hero, too. The word is totally undervalued. How do you now describe a real hero? "Well, he's a hero's hero." I'm with you. Let's reclaim the true meaning of the word.
