The War We Won

wow, skep, what a

beautiful post, seriously.

really true, too. just lovely. and it's hard to see a piece of writing that makes conflict so... prosaic. (i just loved that post)...

Skep

This essay touches me very deeply. Your telling of the story is not the "official" judgment of history but it is the story I have always deemed to be the correct one. Some day this may actually be the history of that period.

However, out of adversity often comes progress. The current crop of veterans are being treated with much more respect for their service by a large percentage of the public.

The mantra of "No More Vietnam's" has become a two-way street as a large veterans community and a civilian support base have actively worked to keep the focus on politicians.

Regardless of how history judges the WOT, this new generation of veterans will be able to hold their heads up without having to stick their chins out.

This may be the legacy of the Korean and Vietnam vets, if so, I will view it as far more valuable than a tick mark in the "W" column.

Thank you, Skep.

excellent Skep

we never lost on the battlefield in Vietnam and many of us are determined not to let the politicians defeat us politically again. That's the big lesson from Vietnam. Good job my friend.

Thanks guys

Part of the motivation for this post was listening to the Dems, and especially Baraki O, trying to take credit for our victory in Iraq. They think they can rewrite history but the truth comes out in the end. Vietnam vets are now finally getting the respect they deserve from everyday people but the key role they played in winning the Cold War is not yet widely recognized.

"baraki O"

hey, is that like "barrachio"? is he going to make al gore come to life?

BG

More like 'borracho' (drunk in Spanish)
Algore will never come to life. That pathetic speech he gave in Obama's Greek Temple Of Doom was one of the most embarrassing moments at the Dem convention-- and 'most embarrassing' was an honor you had to fight for at that convention. Look at the results, no bounce and now they're in total disarray.

"Obama's Greek Temple of Doom"

(laughing hysterically)

gotta hand it to you. that's right up there w/"the emperor has spoken"...

A very good analysis!

I disagree in some areas (I believe you over simplified the Soviet-Red China political positions during this portion of the Cold War); but all-in-all you have done well.

The Viet Nam era vets deserve better. In perhaps a hundred years, they will be placed in the same level of regard as the boys from Valley Forge or the WW2 vets.
