The question I have been wishing I could ask folks like Sullivan is this: What political benefit would George W. Bush get from appointing a politically motivated individual to lead in Iraq? He can't be reelected, he has angered much of the GOP base for reasons other than the war, and Cheney isn't running, so if Petraeus is partisan, what is the benefit to Bush?

I think this is simply another demonstration of Sullivan's complete incapacity to think beyond the moment.
