This is how energy security works in my country:
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/0 4/27/npipe227.xmlA 48 hour strike at one of the UK's key oil refineries leads to fuel stockpiling, and fuel has to be shipped from Europe to keep the country going.
The strike is costing the country £50million per day, which makes you wish that the company bosses had simply done a backroom deal to secure the final salary pensions.
Here's the deal I would make:
We will guarantee a comfortable retirement for you, if you will adopt terms and conditions that recognise this as a PROTECTED industry (on energy security grounds) and from this point onwards it is illegal to strike.
Of course, the comrades would never accept a deal like that would they ... and I suppose it would be too radical for the bosses.
But seriously, these people have the ability to inflict economic damage out of all proportion to their pension claim.
