I believe it is a combination of the religion and the culture. Then again, that religion was made up to appeal to the uneducated tribal arab males of the 7th century. Mohammed did very well with the design, and since their tribal culture has stayed the same (with minor changes), the "religion" has kept it's appeal.

It takes a religion like Islam to be appealing to that kind of culture.
