Re: Brats and Whiners
The Right pragmatic? I think not! They are ideological to the core, even when the factual numbers are staring them in the face. Even when shown that the gov't have in some instances been more efficient than the private sector (i.e. medicare/medicaid), they will scoff and just denounce it simply because it is run by the gov't. Their cynicism toward gov't makes them blind to the facts even when some private sectors like the health insurers have screwed the American public big time. In fact, the Right is repressive in its ideas, which is ironic when you know the history of this country. The early settlers left England because of the repressive State Church, restricting their beliefs. They were essentially the "liberals" of their time, only to come to America and be repressive in their own way, toward social behavior and other ethnic groups. Repressive ideas have NEVER in history contributed to the advancement of society. Repressive ideas never contributed to the advancement of science, technology, positive social interactions between groups, or the arts, the characteristics that make a modern society.
I have a center-left point of view, which means that some parts of our society should be conservative like education, family values and social norms. In the area of economics, it depends on the state we're in.
If conservative believe in personal responsibility, then why not corporate responsibility? Corporation have the power in many instances to wipe out millions of families financially because of the greed of a few board members. How could you support such a structure. This is the flaw of capitalism, and their gamble with the people's money for the past eight years under Bush made us forever vulnerable to economic calamity in the world.
We need health care reform. Personal responsibility has nothing to do with healthcare if you suddenly get cancer or diabetes and the insurance co.s refuses to pay.
