There is a simpler, more fundamental reason for it, namely good old-fashioned competition, in this case competing ideologies.
In a capitlistic society those that are successful and wealthy generally have helped make the world better for others materially (i.e. they'll likely have created wealth, jobs, etc., for others as well as themselves) while religious folks are looking for a better world in a more spiritual sense.
