Skipping the verse?

Why would a Catholic have to skip those verses?

Catholics have to skip these verses...

Catholics confess to a Priest and their sins are forgiven. If that person stays in sin they can keep confessing time after time and the Priest is never obligated to bring the issue to anyone else.

Biblically the Pastor or even another brother or sister in Christ is obligated to address sin in the church directly one on one at first. If the sin continues two or more people are instructed to get involved. Finally if the person in sin does not change they are brought before the congregation and if they do not repent at that time may face getting kicked out of that church.

Catholics kick plenty of people out but the tradition of confession to a Priest not only ignores the versus I sighted in Matt, but can't be found anywhere in the New Testament.

Regarding those verses

"If you brother sins against you..."

This is regarding sins against another person, and it says nothing of being forgiven of sin by the Lord, simply of being reconciled with the other person.

And as for priestly confession, there is no explicit direction to confess to a priest, but Jesus does first Peter, then the other disciples authority to bind and loose sin.

Matthew 16:19
Matthew 18:18

John - I think your post says it all...

You are correct there is no direction to confess to a priest.

Secondly all sin is a transgression against the Lord so you might be splitting hairs with the statement "this is regarding sins against another person."

Matthew 16:19 - In rabbinical literature, binding and loosing refers to what is permitted and not permitted. Some also believe this verse may refer to opening the kingdom to other groups such as Jews and Samarians (Acts 2:3, Acts 8:14-17)

Matthew 18:18 - As in 16:19 the tense here also implys that what is loosed or bound in heaven will have already been determined in heaven. In other words the promise of God's direction to the church is the subject matter here. It is not a liscense to forgive anyone for their sins "for God".
