Here's what the story would have been:

The Dallas Cowboys advanced to Super Bowl XVI due to some erratic behavior by 49ers quarterback Joe Montana. Just as the 49ers gained possession on their own 11 late in the 4th quarter Montana left the 49ers to negotiate with the Cowboys to split the NFC Championship, a plan that Montana said was supported by San Francisco coach, Bill Walsh. Montana's early departure left the 49ers without a quarterback and forced them to put their kicker into the game. The kicker failed to lead San Francisco to victory and Dallas advanced to meet Cinncinati in the Super Bowl. In an interview Montana said "I support the 49ers, I just don't support what they're doing."
