Where in the world....

..did You come across this guy?

Reminds Me of "A Clockwork Orange."

JimmyC

I've been a fan of his for a long time. I know he is very coarse but he writes the most decrepit songs. He's actually a very highly regarded singer/ songwriter who occupies his very own genre. With a voice and face like that, you gotta be good. He's been around for a very long time and very successful but still waiting for his first top 40 hit. As a bartender, I would think you would appreciate smoky boozy.

Jimmy

The first step to appreciating Tom Waits is to get the humor of his compositions. He almost always has what sounds like a lazy Salvation Army band trying to play the blues for accompaniment. They always just a little bit out if time, just like Tom. If you listen to him enough, it's not morbid. It's a difficult act to pull off but it works for a lot of people.

I trust Ya..

..and I'll give 'em a try.

Thanks, PPhil.

good analogy

PPhil, Party politics...

Sort of also reminds me of “send lawyers, guns and money… the chit has hit the fan”. But the Dems circumcision of the election, and our conceding of conservative candidates, does conjure up gambling in Havana.

However, as good as the analogy is I don’t believe God’s away on biz, vacation or other; its more that we have taken one.(Ps 100:5 for ex) But the country also enshrined the killing of our posterity, so one can only wonder about its itinerary if not our destination.

My best and see you in the funnies...good thoughts and passion, something libs think they have a lock on.

Phil

Glad I decide to check some of the junior blogs. I like Tom Waits, and you're right, this fits perfectly.

I left a reply over at Scarletpimpernel's regarding your comment about solicitations. I return every one I get if it's postage paid.

P.S. You used to have an e-mail address on your blog, gaptoothedcretin@ somethingorother?

Thanks xpressit

BTW, I'm not retiring. I'll be commenting here regularly. Part of my plan for enjoying this year is driving the RINOs crazy by tying them up in knots. But I do have a project in the works that I will announce here when I launch it. You might be surprised. I have lots of things I want to write about and discuss with people but politics has become a cartoonish dead-end lately. I just can't get into a steady dose of negativity. Stay tuned.

VPat

Yeah, I hadn't noticed that my e-mail address disappeared. I went back to the set-up function and apparently they eliminated that feature. It's gaptoothedcretin@sbcglobal.net. Drop me a line. I have some things in the works.

It's deja vu all over again

I had not heard of this guy until last night. My son is home from school and we went to the bookstore together where he bought two of this guys albums. Then today what's the first thing I come to at TH?

It kind of reminded me of ZZ Tops "La Grange", only without the good musical part.

Sarge

Without the good musical part? You don't like the dispirited, a little tipsy and bored Salvation Army Band?

Hahahahahaha

That's priceless, man.

Perfect cynicism for the age. Couldn't be more a propos.

PPhil

Lovin' it!! Tom Waits is a great late nightr listen...after the somky booze!! Stop by an dcheck out my latest 2/3 posts...

Nee

Checked out your latest post. I think I left a confusing comment.

Doc

Ah the pressure of defending my title. I wonder if Tiger Woods ever feels like this.

I wouldn't consider Tom Waits "culty" so much as an acquired taste. Even so, I would lever drive somewhere and listen to him in my car. A little goes a long way with Tom but at the right time, hits the spot.

Phil

The kid tells me that this guy actually destroyed his voice by screaming into a pillow to develop his unique style.

I didn't independently verify that but, Heck, he's the music major.

sarge

Could be. It certainly isn't natural. Imagine this guy serving drinks at a bar. O-o-o-o-kay! Gotta go!

And I Thought Real "Cajun" Music...

was out there. I guess my daughter is correct. I am a "throw-back" to the 1800's.

I am sorry, PP, I just can't appreciate his music. I guess I will stick to classical (Bach, Mozart, etc.), true rock & roll, country (the type that the Liberals call: "You broke my heart, so I busted your jaw), and bluegrass.

Grey Ghost

Hey, I like Cajun music. Try Beausoleil. The best.

ghost

Couldn't help but note that you live in Swan Lake, Mississippi and love classical music. I guess I need to move to the bowery if I'm going to be a Tom Waits fan.

Actually...

PP, I live in Clarksdale. Swan Lake is SE by about 30 miles on US Highway 49E.

I love Tom Waits

Phantom 409! This guy can write, and he lives the life of the songs too. What a gritty dude. Ever seen him in a move Phil?

Davecat

I might have but I can't remember. Was he ever in Miami Vice? To write the songs he writes, you have to have done some tough living.

Sam

Yeah, the senior circuit blogs have morphed into mindless bobblehead RINO ranting. It looks to me like the TH audience is probably shrinking. The appeal of TH to me was that is was known as a conservative blog. Now, it is just a Republican whining room. I'll be letting you know about the other thing. I already secured my own domain: http://www.thewayweare.org and am working my way through the rest. Thanks for your suggestions.

Phil

I finally got a new post up, stop if you get a chance.

Gotta part ways with you

on this one. In plain terms, that guy just freaks me out. Reminds me of childish nightmares. I can't do it.

Give me Emmylou or Give me Death.

renfield sings!

I have not listened to much of his music although I've heard of him. He's no John Prine;)

(i'm thinking of off-beat 'culty' singers here)

Forget the tazer

I changed my mind.

I want this one:

http://www.komando.com/videos/3-4.asp

SC

Yeah, he's a scary guy but it certainly fits the message. And I have just about everything Emmylou ever recorded. I listen to her often. Waits, once in a very great while. You have to be in the mood and only for certain situations.

Scarlet

There is only one John Prine. He's a good fit with Emmylou.

Ray gun

Keep in mind that it's CBS reporter, you know, "fake but accurate"? Wuss.

Whoa - The Day the Earth Stood Still!

that's a scary weapon! We can't let rednecks get a holt of it. hahahaha. A few beers and ...

Scarlet

Is it legal to own one? It would be fun at barbecues.

Phil

It sounds like a lot of people of thinking about bailing out of TH. Are you considering going stand alone domain or some place like blogspot?

Sarge

There are a few of us who are planning something very different. We're just noodling around for now but we'll come up with something interesting. It won't be a hostile breakaway from Townhall. We just want to do something more interesting away outside of the TH Republican echo chamber. Might as well turn over Townhall to Michael Medved and LaRaza.

I got you

I originally looked at blogspot and WP before deciding on TH because of the juniors. The mainpage is dropping off like crazy. Any time that Ann Coulter only gets 480 comments and is the most viewed article, that signals a down turn.

McCain as the nominee is bad for business when your business is conservative thought.

Phil

I thought I was the only one who had ever heard of both Tom Waits and John Prine! Dang, even in CA!!

the Next Macy Gray

Courtney Love? Alannis Morrisette.

To everyone

My laptop just crashed so things are going to be slow for a couple of days. If somebody had told me that spilling a cup of coffee on it is not recommended, I wouldn't have done it. At least it wasn't new and I'm kind of excited about the one I just bought.

VP: any respectable country fan who actually reads cares about lyrics nows about John Prine. It seems all of the greats pay him homage as an inspiration. Tom Waits? Not so much.

Scarlet: I'm not all that familiar with Macy Gray and I'm not that keen on Alannis. I'm going back further. I see Amy more with the really great jazz and blues singers. There is real talent behind those tatoos. Too bad she is such a derelict.

yes, that's my point PPhil

We'll hope for the best but we've heard it before about who's the Next Big Thing.

I actually LIKE Tom Waits!

Years back in the mid-80s he was kind of hard to get into, but once I listened enough, I really got into him. And I love him in the movie Down By Law. And another Jim Jarmusch one, too, I think...

Anyway, yeah, very appropriate song for these times. And Amy's a good listen, too. Thanks!

Amy's ironic anyway...

Are you kidding me?

Daddy wants me in rehab or whatever...and what now? REHAB.

And paid for, stem to stern, by the Lucky English.

Spot On, Brits.
Great prize.

PS

(I assume when you say Amy and refer to Blues you mean Winehouse??)

It gets even more Ironic: WINEhouse.

SC

Talk about ironic, they had to spring her out of rehab so she could record a special performance of the song for the Grammys where she won for best song. "I won't go, go, go!" But there she is.

All rightie then

Who am I to make comments about other people's taste in music? But, here goes.

I'm with SC, the first guy is SCARY and the Amy chick, looks like she has hepatitis or something. Oh, and I think her music is just AWFUL.

I like MOST all late 60's and 70's music, from classic rock to Black Sabbath, motown to pop and yes, since confession is good for the soul........disco. There. I said it. Now don't laugh.

Now you all know what it's like to be me. Forever stuck in the 70's. :- )

1maschrom

Now you're scaring me. Stuck in the 70s? Man! On the other hand, my favorite era was the punk era of the late 70s- early 80s, you know, The Police, U2, Blondie, B-52s,... Otherwise, my tastes are very eclectic. I have a respectable classical and jazz collection. I never know what is going to appeal to me next. (No rap or hip-hop or Black Sabbath, though - nothing there.)

Hahaha! Phil

Don't be scared! Although the Sabbath album I listened to WAS a little scary. You know, I never really did get to into punk. I guess I was scared away by all the hair and makeup........or maybe that was the gothic kids. Haha!

Not sure if this comes across, but i'm not much of a music aficionado. The police were punk? Well then, me likes me some punk! :- )

Just curious

Is there such a thing as gothic music? Marilyn Manson maybe? Seriously, one look at that guy (and I use that word loosely) can scare the pi*s out of a person. Dude should star in his own horror movie.

The things you do for your kids

About 8 years ago I endured 14 hours at OzzFest with my son. No way was I turning him loose in that freak show at age 14. Fortunately they grow up. He is now gigging with a Mountain Music band in college.

Sgt Relic

Thank you for giving me hope. My 15 year old son is into some really awful screamer music now. I guess you can call it music, but it doesn't sound like it to me. I like most everything from Mozart to rock to bluegrass, no disco, rap or whatever you call this screamer stuff.

maschrom1

I guess "punk" isn't the term was looking for. Whatever genre The Police fit in, that's what I was really into. I never got into gothic heavy metal though or glamrock (Bowie, Johnnie Glitter, Lou Reed, etc...). I go with what I like whatever slot it fits in.

Phil

Yeah, I never bothered with labels. If I liked it, I liked it.

Anything where the dudes were wearing lots of makeup? Well, that just struck me as..........wrong.

I once dated someone who was OBSESSED with David Bowie. Like back in his Ziggy Stardust days! It actually caused problems in our relationship (pardon me but I thought Ziggy was WEIRD). We eventually broke up over a huge dissagreement over who was funnier- Monty Python or Benny Hill (RIP). Monty was a bit over my head (plus I couldn't understand what the hell they were saying half the time). Whereas who could argue the comedic value of an old fat guy chasing around half naked 19 yr old girls? Now THAT was FUNNY!

Virgina Patriot- I'll take screamer music (if I must) any day over Rap. I HATE rap. I tell my younger son (who likes it) to TURN THAT CRAP OFF! Hey, we all have our limits.

Sarge

Sorry for taking so long to reply. I trashed my PC last Wednesday and am still waiting for my new one.

BTW, don't ever shop at Buy.com. I placed my order Wednesday afternoon (it was "in stock") for next day delivery but by Friday afternoon, the order had had to be shipped but was still "in process" so I canceled the order. I then found a better model at a better price directly from Hewlett Packard which will be delivered Monday.

As to your question, Blogspot is a bad idea because of linking issues and because it is ignored by search engines. I went to GoDaddy and signed up for 3 years of hosting with my own domain. A few of us will be linking together and I'm hoping to build a deep list of guest bloggers who don't want to set up their own blogs. All we are looking for are for people who write well, with personality and come up with interesting subjects or concepts (video e.g.). Nothing rude or profane. We are looking for upbeat, fun, intelligent and quality. I'll still keep a presence here just to keep poking the bobbleheads and anything political I have to say but I'm pretty talked out on politics. What is there left to say? The GOP blew it.

Phil

What's the old chestnut? Price, Quality, Service, pick any two.

I think we are all feeling the political burnout of this long presidential cycle, further exacerbated by an unsatisfactory outcome. My latest send up, as you know, dealt with nothing more serious than jelly beans.

TH fixing the old problems with a new set of glitches has not upped the enthusiasm level (I am still unable to add to my blog roll) out here in the farm system. I'm taking a wait and see posture for now.

the other 'hard to listen to'

"There's an evenin' haze settlin' over the town
Starlight by the edge of the creek
The buyin' power of the proletariat's gone down
Money's gettin' shallow and weak
The place I love best is a sweet memory
It's a new path that we trod
They say low wages are a reality
If we want to compete abroad

I love Tom Waits (too) - am apparently hearing impaired - tho their words ,,,,,,,,,,,,

gawd - I hope he never has a 'top 40 hit'.

PPhil

This is much more to my liking than Tom Waits. Amy might want to ignore her own advice but Janice became more famous dead than alive, so....

You do have a penchant for derelict types. LOL!

Phil

Gee I hope its better for you now -- a new hookup. May its force be with you! But did you think of trying Newegg since its in your area. I ordered some parts there and they were right now quick. (I couldn't beat the price or selection either.) BTW: I just saw an ABC nightline reporting a consumer revolution, consumer rage -- Comcast to AOL to Apple. Sounds interesting "Rage Pays"? 70 year old woman takes a hammer into comcast's customer service department...LOL

xpressit

Yeah, I did order a hard drive enclosure from New Egg and it came in regular mail the next day. They are the best. I have business applications that don't work on Vista which is what complicated replacing my computer. I ended up getting a better computer direct from HP and for a better priced than from Buy.com and got a free printer too. I am now muddling through trying to set up hosting at GoDaddy which seems simple conceptually but I just can't get it to work.

Phil

I hear you applications compatibility can stink. I used xp-pro for that reason, and worked well. Now I'm told Word 2000 is obsolete and errors away. Someone has this all timed...

PPhil

New video clip at my place if your back online.

You Got To See This

http://gatewaypundit.blogspot.com/2008/04/absolut-ly-outrag eous-ad-in-mexico-city.html

VPat

I cut and pasted your link but I get a "blog could not be found" message.

Sorry Phil

I haven't quite mastered links yet, I guess. Joe put that on a thread earlier today. Sam has provided a link that will work, I think.

Sam, VPat

Yeah, I checked it out. I wonder how effective an add like that is. The Mexican government can't even control it's own country west and north of Mexico City and they had been leaving for years when the Americans began showing up in California. I really don't think there is much chance of any part of the US being reclaimed. If I were a drinker, I definitely wouldn't allow Absolut within my eyesight.

Phil

I saw your post at Paddy's. I have always wanted to get to Fenway.

BTW, paddy created his blog mainly as a hangout "out of the line of fire" of the main blogs. If you read the early threads, you'll get clued in. Most of the time the posting itself is a cover. The latest baseball one was considerably more effort than usual. It's kind of an online Cheers. Sometimes people wander in, but it's mostly the same group, all regulars on the main blog. The right leaning regulars, no libs. House rules are that everyone is welcome and we don't go after each other. Paddy even called off OHM when he started after me about not voting for McCain. Most of them would be in the nose-holding camp, but out on the main blog they're in full campaign mode. OHM must have taken offense, although paddy was very nice about it, because he hasn't been back since. He still spars with me regularly on the main blog.

VPat

Yeah, I've seen Paddy commenting here for a long time. I've never had a run-in with him and have the impression that I don't have an issue with him. I've had plenty of run-ins with OHM and usually ignore him unless he opens himself up to a broadside. I don't see any point in engaging with those who vote GOP automatically, especially since we may have a true-blue conservative running after all, Bob Barr. I pretty much limit myself to the main blogs chipping away at the hypocrisy and letting them know that we are still here and have not changed our minds. I suspect it's driving them crazy but I don't see the "shut up" comments showing up anymore. Meantime, I'm glad it's baseball season again. Always cheers me up.

Phil

paddy was originally a Hunter guy like me and has resigned himself to nose-holding in the fall. Many of the regulars were Romney supporters that figure they have to vote for McCain, a Democrat in the White House is unthinkable( I know, I know, MC IS a Democrat). There would be more defections from the GOP over Mc if it weren't for the GWOT. Radical Islamics scare them more than the colonization of the country.

I think paddy invited me to hang out there because he is also concerned about illegal aliens and we both like shooting. Everybody knows where I stand and they don't razz me about holding my nose. Paddy's intent was to give us a place to just "talk". It's kind of interesting to get to know more about other posters. NeoConScum is a particularly interesting guy once you get to know him. When he first showed up, he and I were exchanging shots over Rudy. Paddy was the one who jumped in between and got us talking to one another.

BTW

Paddy is in San Diego county, another Californian. It MUST be really beautiful AND have great weather to keep you and Brian and Paddy in the People's Republic.

Phil

In case you missed this:

http://www.reluctantvoter.com/

VPat

I've done a ton of research on the GWOT I now think that the view that the GOP is more serious on terror than the Dems is a myth. When the Bush admin first took over, Condi Rice, as National Security Advisor, muddied up the anti-terrorism effort by demoting the chief anti-terrorism official, Dick Clarke, to a lower position. The other manic terrorism fighter, John P; O'Neil of the FBI, was hounded into retirement. I am convinced that 9/11 would have been avoided had the Bush admin merely maintained the status quo (not that Clinton was doing a good job either). I have discovered that terrorists are not that robust because the Egyptians, Saudis and Israelis are very effective in prosecuting them. All we have to do is not be stupid and I don't see anyone running who would make the mistake that Bush made in 2001. It just is not the issue that everyone makes. It's important but the Dems are no less serious about it than the Republicans and history shows that. Once presidents have to fill cabinet positions, reality imposes itself. McCain is NOT anymore serious than Hillary and probably Obama on this issue. It's all about posturing and since truth doesn't matter when campaigning, both parties are merely scare-mongering voters to persuade them that the "other guy" will bring about the end of the world. It's childish and the most stupid of voters are the most highly partisan of either party. These people substitute passion for thinking. This is a great country and presidents are not dictators. They all sober up once they feel the weight of their legacy upon entering the Oval Office. They want to get things done and they are engulfed with the bureaucracy of power.

If people are going to "hold their noses", they should do so to vote against the one-party system. I am just not interested in conversations with ignorant fools who are slaves to their irrational fears, like the boogie man under their beds.

VPat

I had seen that "reluctant voter" site earlier. The problem is that McCain isn't wrong jut 50% of the time but 95% of the time and the other 5% is not a sure thing either. I think the "nose holders" are dumber than the Dems. At least the Dems are not being sneaky about what they stand for.

Phil

I agree, just thought it was funny. Such enthusiasm seldom wins elections.

DNC Phil's New Campain Song

They tried to make me vote for McCain but I said 'no, no, no'
Yes it means Barak but when the cons come back you'll know know know
I ain't got the time and if Virgina Patriot thinks I'm fine
They tried to make me vote McCain but I won't go go go
