I'm blaming Dr. Spock!

You want to know "when did Americans become a nation of whiners?" Well, my opinion is that it is the parents' of America's fault. The day that parents bought into Dr. Spock's philosophy (and I take this quote from Wikipedia) "His ideas about childcare influenced several generations of parents to be more flexible and affectionate with their children, and to treat them as individuals, whereas the previous conventional wisdom had been that child rearing should focus on building discipline, and that, e.g., babies should not be "spoiled" by picking them up when they cried.

Part II

Okay I wasn't finished....
Parents have gone from treating their children as "individuals" to treating them as their authority. I can't stand it, and it isn't just in the liberal, amoral families; but also in conservative Christian families, who would claim to have a Biblical world-view. Their children come home and complain about their teacher, coach, boss, etc., and rather than have parents who say, "They have been placed in authority over you, and you have a responsibility to submit to that authority and perform your personal duty regardless of your opinion." They tell them that they are right, encouraging their complaining attitude, their whining, and their sense of entitlement. Thus, they grow into a generation of Americans who have lost the concept of hard work, duty, responsibility, and expecting the "wealth" to be spread around. I mean, why not? Mom and Dad have been spreading their wealth around to their kids, indulging selfish, lazy children. Now, these selfish, lazy people expect Big Brother to do the same.
