Burt's two comments you label contradictory are not mutually exclusive. Both could be, and probably were, true.

The anti-war protesters were within their rights in criticizing the war, the draft dodgers were not. The citizens of this country have not only rights as a benefit, but obligations and responsibilities also, abiding by the law is but one. Anyone who left the country to evade the draft should have been left to enjoy the rights of the country they ran to. To allow them to return was a slap in the face of those of us who, also, had no desire to die, but served anyway because we had the moral fiber to do what was required by law.

A person can not decide as to which laws are to be obeyed or not, to do so is, by definition, against the law or, criminal.
