I think

Ollie is upset that the US is not the world dictator. That Obama sought help in dealing with N. Korea implies nothing negatively--unless of course the US can assume the right to dictate to all countries what to do and when to do it. Support for US dominance assumes America's moral superiority, which is disproved by America's actions in trying to show its moral superiority.

If we had the Republicans in charge, we would probably be, IMO, less than a year away from a possible nuclear exchange with Russia over BMDs. That is because under Republican leadership, the US acts as an arrogant blowhard condemning others for the sins it commits against others.

It is not that the Republicans and the Democrats have nothing in common. Both believe in American Exceptionalism. The Republicans believe in a WWF version while the Democrats believe in a combination of an Oprah version followed by a Cops version. The difference in their error of promoting American exceptionalism is subtlety.

It's better...

...that America be the 'world dictator' than China.

Miguel

Who says we have to choose? Who says that if we are not dictators, we will be dominated? And if we are dictators, we will be dominating, and will thus make unnecessary enemies, of others.

Of course the implication of what you are saying is that none of our actions can wrong because the world is about dominating or being dominated. Besides the paranoia that is inherent in such a view, no one takes that view seriously.

For example, was 9-11 an immoral horrific attack? If the world is about nothing more than dominating or being dominated, then the answer is no. But who in their right mind believes that 9-11 was not immoral?

You see, your view, as expressed by Ollie, can only be accepted when one takes a selective and relative view of morality. THat is when others attack us, it is wrong. But when we attack them, there are no moral issues because it is either dominate or be dominated. That is nothing more than being selective, hypocritical, and threatening. You simply take American behavior for granted while taking exception at the actions of others.

And finally, with this view that says we are above reproach in all that we do, you promote an authoritarianism, which is evident from the type personality the author of the article has. Both of you are simply saying to America:

Do it my way or perish.

When you make too many unnecessary enemies, doing it your way will cause us to perish.
