Blame Games

Hey Flag,

I wonder if this isn't reflective of the continuing entrenchment of a collectivist mind-set, 'it takes a village'. If it takes a village to raise a child, and something goes wrong with said child, then we look to the village for answers, not the child.

It also reminds me of the determinism vs. free will arguments I'd study and discuss at school, being representative of a very determinist mind-set, i.e. he had no choice, he was raised that way in such an environment which led to this happening. Thus since he had no choice, he can't be blamed. Logically, you'd think that this argument would cover those being blamed, but it never seems to, I've long had problems with determinism, without even bringing in the theological element.

Phil

I don't exactly see it at that way; I think it comes from a society that wants to abandon personal responsibility at nearly any cost! You've seen the coverage...how quick was it before the coverage turned away from what the shooter did to what the school failed to do? I just think that it is easier to blame someone else for everything than it is to take responsibility for yourself. That way the individual is never the bad guy, as someone else always played a role..."the Devil made me do it" mindset.

Maybe then, this is more

a continuation of the 'judge not' attitude that seems to permeate the left. Can't judge anybody's actions, Cho, Saddam, anybody, because judging is bad since it violates the laws of moral relativism. Therefore the only ones who are bad are those who make judgements at all.

Flag: Cease and desist

There will be no more injections of common sense into this issue on your part.

You are to stop immediately!

We are in complete accord in everything except:

It was NBC that aired this manifesto first, followed by the rest of the pack, including ABC.

BTW: Wasn't this the same media that refused to publish the Mohammed cartoons when those cartoons were clearly at least as newsworthy as this so called "manifesto", citing the sensitivity of the situation?

Shot selection again!

Scottie

I stand corrected! I didn't actually see the video because I rarely watch network news, but i was reacting to all the furor over the airing. And you are exactly right, these are he same sensitive souls that dared not show the Mohammed toons...mainly to save themselves from any types of threats or reactions, IMHO. Just like we discussed earlier, they shape the debate by wht they air...and what they ignore.

Phil

Your take on judgement, or lack thereof, is spot on! No one is comfortable judging the actions of the individual, so they spread blame around or try to hold a collective responsible. By doing that, no one gets ofended, someone gets blamed, and everyone gets to say we held someone responsible without actually doing so. Does that make sense to you?

re: Lockdown

What would that even look like? It would take more than the campus police to pull that off.
