"Multiple Choice Moralities"

I'll pray with you

The main problem with us these days is self-ism. There was a time not too long ago, when people did what needed doing whether they liked it or not. It is only recently, 1900s) that we could have a mid life crisis, because until then, the "next right thing" was right in front of us.

Kids need to be told things. Sloth (mental and physical) is a force and force is required to overcome it. Not every idea is as valid as the next, not every impulse is worthy of attention, feelings are not facts.

Television has made child rearing a competition in our own homes.

Of all the jobs I have ever had, there is one that stands out as an imperative. "I entrust these children of mine to you. Keep them safe."

Ethics is what's needed

Morals are subject to current social beliefs and are different for societies of differing religions and cultures. (moral issues - bikinis accepted, smoking, alcohol consumption, inter-racial marriage, etc)

Ethics, though, are universal and are of such importance to all humankind they remain unchanged and unchallenged through time and across cultures. (Ethical issues - murder, rape, theft, lying, adultery, etc.)

Children are not born with common sense nor any sense of morals or ethics. That is why they have parents. My parents taught me that there are things that you won't want to do, but they need doing anyway. Also, Jesus said that the measure of one's life, the things he will be remembered and respected for, are the things he does for others. Service to others may not be fun or popular but it instills into the doer a set of beliefs and emotions that he has done something REALLY worth the effort.

Thank you

KenUSA and glnflwrs, Thank you for stopping by and commenting.

glnflwrs, I think we are both on the same wave link but have our words confused. What you are calling morals I consider to be values judgements. Values are subject to change. Morals on the other hand are what you call ethics and to my mind is another but slightly different and less used word for morals. Ethics rules are often written down as ways to conduct on es affairs in business for instance. Morals were instilled into each individual by God and if we will but listen to that voice within we will not stray from the path. Nor will our values and ethics need to be reevaluated.

Again thank you both for stopping by and commenting. Sincerely, Brenda Bowers
