I'm not a veteran, I'm sorry to say. I was 1-A in the first draft lottery in 1970, the year I was nineteen and eligible but my lottery number was 290 or something close to that so I just went on with my life. I certainly salute those who did serve and contrast them with the many people I know who actively dodged service.

The Thing that Conservatives...
have to do IS NOT GIVE UP!
We have as our example Washington and his army in November of 1776. When Washington crossed the Delaware in December with his small group of REAL patriots, the World has written off the Cause.
On January 1, 1777, it was a whole new "ball game".

We need a leader. We're more than a small group and we're going to get larger. Every conservative step forward was preceded by a liberal landslide.
Johnson-Nixon
Carter-Reagan
Clinton-Gingrich
All three Democrats started with a majority in both houses of Congress and ended either being run out of office (in the case of the first two) or having to accommodate (and take credit for) conservative accomplishments in the case of Clinton.
All hope is NOT lost but we have a lot of things to endure on the way back.
Every Demo landslide was preceded by a liberal Rep president.
Eisenhower
Ford
HW Bush

Cleaning out the Republican Party is painful but not a tragedy. Look at what's happening in Britain. All of a sudden people have turned on the enviro-nuts and are serving them up some big helpings of ridicule!

There was a huge traffic tie-up in London today by truckers protesting the $10 a gallon fuel prices. The public there see's this Global Warming nonsense as a scam to raise taxes and they've had enough.

A never-ending problem
Skep,
Your point about the nature of the problem is spot on. Unfortunately, given the size of the federal government, and how much money and power the folks elected to congress have now, it will probably be impossible to get back to the idea of restraining government, let alone trying to shrink it in any meaningful way.
Maybe it's the lack of coffee talking, but I would think it will take a truly catastrophic scenario for the country to get to the point of really reconsidering the monstrosity that we have allowed the parasites in Washington to create. Barring that, we're most likely stuck being unhappy about it for the rest of our lives.
Doesn't mean you give up, I guess, but that you cast your votes knowing it may never make a difference.

has some points. If you don't ever get a candidate that is worth supporting, nothing ever changes.
In other words, the major parties control who and who doesn't run.
But a third party, at the grass-roots level with internet communications, could possibly change this.
Otherwise, we are back to a 1775 senario.

Circumstances can change everything. The policies the Dems are advocating have failure built into them. Remember 1994. Clinton was being pushed around by the Dems in the Senate and Congress as they fought like a bunch of hyenas over the spoils of the 92 election. They went WAY too far, as liberals always do. As they will this time.
All we need is a leader.

On a hopefull note, WRT global warming BS, I saw Newt on the TV saying we needed to drill in Alaska the other day. I was mighty confused, as you can imagine, because I thought he had been given a green lobotamy, but there he was!
As for a leader, who's it going to be?? You've read my most recent post, so who's going to step up? It's time to stop waiting, and step forward collectively.

... but human nature doesn't. Even with the over-reaching by the Dems following '92 and the subsequent Republican takeover of Congress, conservatives essentially got window dressing.
Social Security reform? Ok, I guess, but it's not like we've somehow really cut back the program or taken it even a minute portion of the way toward privatization.
Heck, even Reagan couldn't figure out a way to get rid of the Department of Education.
Gray Ghost mentions a new party as a possible twist that could finally result in real change. Perhaps. But even a new party of sufficient stature to threaten the 2 big parties would probably still need something truly big to coincide with it in order to get enough people on board with creating a change in the bloated system we currently have that would be really beyond the rearranging of the deck chairs we see by the Ds and Rs when they swap offices.

We HAVE Cut Social Security!
Ed. The cost of living index that measures inflation and determines the increase adjustment for Social Security says that inflation is three or four percent. Do you think inflation is three or four percent? When the COLA doesnt match inflation that is acut. Liberals dont play fair. The Senior Citizens and the 401k yuppies are in for a real shock in The Age Of Hope.
