Might be the Yanks' year, Paddy. They are playing awesomely...And, this is without recent precedent for them, they are actually very likable. Go figure! Texsheira(sp?)was a HUGE
aquisition for them. Nick Swisher is a BLAST.
With Boston struggling, our Rays might get a shot at the Wild Card. BUT, if NY keeps at its present level of play, nobody in the AL is gonna best'um.

Well, MaineCon
...expressed his misery also....in another thread....overthe whompin' the Sox took over the weekend. Hope they can recover against the Tigers.
The Dodgers aren't doing any better. Three losses in a row and 6 out of their last ten, and their lucky to have won that many! I've never like the way Torre uses pitchers....he just keeps running them out there until they break.
He had Jason Schmidt on the payroll making big bucks for the last two years while sitting on the DL rehabbing a shoulder. So the guy finally comes back and what does Torre do? He sticks him in the starting rotation...! Wouldn't you think he'd let him work out of the bullpen for a while.....an inning or two at a time so he could build up some strength?
But no....four starts and right back on the DL again.
Sheesh! This ain;t rocket science.....

Boy that last series in the Bronx was like old times. Sox finding ways to lose every game. Painful.
Got one back last night with Penny on the mound so that was good. Too bad these guys have to ever play on the road. Home cookin' suits them. Their solid bullpen now is starting to have some serious cracks. They were unbelievable for the first three months but now it is scarey whoever Tito brings in.
Anyway, off tomorrow to Seattle. Too bad the Yanks will miss Felix Hernandez in the 4 game series - and they're missing Halladay in Toronto this week - how do they do that!?!
Agree with Paddy. No better tiome of year than the fall. The only downside from this New Englander is the impending winter on it's way. Man, it's cold...and long up her.

We were talking on the other thread about potential alternatives to AARP. I was investigating a group called Americana Seniors Association (ASA). Sounds like they are putting themselves in the position of a grizzly over a stream and catching all the AARP salmon who are leaping out of the lefty water....
I sent them an email about 3 weeks ago (give or take), and still have not heard back from them, but on their website, they are offering a deal where if you send them your torn up AARP card, you can get two years membership for the price of one....
It would be nice if we could use this crisis to get an AARP alternative going strong. Mr. Alinsky would be so proud....!

Spent the past week in Seattle
As I flew from coast to coast, viewing the country from 37,000 feet, I couldn't help but thinking what a great country we are blessed to inhabit. The beauty is breathtaking.
I feel so indebted to those who sacrificed, fought and worked so hard to establish the freedoms that we so often take for granted.
I've never felt more threatened by those who want to steer this country, and the rights endowed by our creator, more toward a socialistic society. As concerned as I am, I still believe that the American public will reject these proposals from "The One".
The town hall meetings have helped strengthen that belief. I just wish we had some better leadership from the right to stand up like the people are willing to do. Why aren't our representatives, supposedly conservative, as vociferously opposing these proposals as are the people they represent?
On another note - Sox-Yankees this week-end. Again, not good pitching matchups for my Sox, but at least the bats have come alive a bit during the sweep in Toronto.
Go Sox!
Paddy, I hope I didn't stray into too political in my comments. If so let me know. Certainly don't want to offend anyone here at the corral.

And what's the deal with Penny throwing a shutout for the Giants and Smoltz giving up 2 runs in three starts in St Louis? What's that all about? And Lugo getting it done in St louis as well? What's that all about? Doesn't shed a very good light on the Bosox pitching coach John Farrell.

The only game I've managed to get my tail out to this year was Sox-Angels....about two days after Nick Adenhart was killed.
Penny looked good beating the Angels. (Jason Bay with 2 dingers looked even better)
Penny has a huge gripe with the Dodgers, so he figures any way he can hurt them is good. He will get the chance in person next week. That's his motivation....
I've seen a million times somebody going to a new team and playing at the top of their game for a while. Sometimes it's just a better fit for that player and he keeps on playing well....other times it's a temporary thing.
It's too soon to say for Smoltz and Penny.
In any case, tonight's game is a big one for both teams, and the pitching matchup is not too bad.....

I think the Rays have some great young players. Zobrist, with his ability to play multiple positions and his ability to hit from both sides of ther plate make him a real keeper.
I love Bartlett, Crawford, Pena, and Longoria has killed us. The Iwamura injury was big this year. If you'd had him in the line-up everyday, permitting Zobrist to play right...who knows?
Pitching wasn't quite what it was last year but still some great young arms. Unfortunately, money constaints hurt as well. Even though Kazmir had been a bit less than they had hoped, he's still a tough left handed pitcher. Those are tough to come by.

General Petraeus, Baseball, Perfection..
What a DAY. Missus Neo got the autograph on a ball she's been trying for years to get: Jimmy Leland. He couldn't escape her clutches and have a peaceful-corner-of-the-dugout pre-game cigarette! Little Minx nailed him. She also got her 3rd Evan Longoria...for a Rays Nut girlfriend. But, for me, here's the HUGE NEWS of the day...
General David Petraeus threw out the first pitch. We were sitting in the best seats in the house--thanks to fan friendly ushers & no one claiming the seats with tickets--directly up from home plate. I looked over at the box directly to our right by 20-yards and there sat the General with some family & friends. I was already so damn thankful for having seen him in person...Well, I went over past a box loaded with young security guys and to the edge of his box. I asked the woman sitting closest to me and next to him if I could 'Thank the General'..He heard me and turned to me extending his hand and I said,"God Bless you General Petraeus. Thank you for your great service, Sir." That Warrior said that I was very kind and thanked me. I went back to our seats with tears in my eyes and told Missy that,"My year is MADE!" Then, the Rascal pulled a fresh ball from her bag and a black pen from her pocket and said,"Wonder if the General would sign a ball for me?" I said,"You know, I bet he would." Little Devil went right over and wrapped the General around her finger, got his perfect signature on the 'sweet spot' and he even drew 4-stars under his name! It will sit on my ancient roll top desk where I can smile at it from where I sit right now.
We lost in the 9th Inning--our relievers/closers are lousy lately--and I couldn't care less. A PERFECT Day. Thank you, God.

Sorry Paddy and Neo
I was sky high and euphoric as well Saturday night as my Cougars took on, and prevailed against the Sooners. Too bad Bradford got hurt, but it was a close game even prior to his injury.
The Mountain West gets no respect and having three teams - Utah, TCU and BYU nationally ranked, yet not apart of the BCS consideration is a travesty. It always helps when these teams can knock off powerhouses from the Big 12 and other conferences.
Bosox continue to struggle. They are not a good road team, but the Rays and even the Rangers are not making much headway. I still think the Sox will make the wild card - then anything can happen.
Neo, I'm glad you had a great week-end, and am a bit envious of your encounter with the good General. Congratulations!

The Yanks are in LaLa land for three and if the Halos could do a sweep, and if the Sox can take 3 of 4 in KC (I don't like the Greinke-Paul Byrd match-up on Tuesday), who knows, maybe if the Sox are withing 3 by the time the Skankees roll into Fenway on Friday...maybe there's a chance to make it a Yanks-Andels ALDS instead of a Sox-Angels.
Not happy with the Seminoles knocking off my Cougars yesterday, either.
The weather here was unbelievable. No humidity. High of 72. Georgeous, but it's probably time to winterize the boat and get the old Sea Ray into storage.

Paddy, you probably wouldn't like it much either - Big Sky is right. Wind, dirt in the summer and snow in the winter. Not nearly as pleasant of a place as the Bozeman area. Now that's beautiful country.
I grew up a couple of hours north of Poactello - about an hour south of West Yellowstone on the Henry's Fork of the Snake River. Gorgeous. although I've been in Maine for 25 years, my heart will always be out there.
Good to see you and Neo back. We need to hang out more here.
Best time of year. Weather is fantastic. MLB playoffs a couple weeks away and NFL and college football underway. Doesn't get much better.
Could be an interesting week-end. A possibility of the Yankees and Red Sox both clinching on the same field on the same day (Yankees the division and Sox the Wild Card). Wouldn't that be wild? Can you imagine the Sox having to pop the corks to celebrate while the Yankees are celebrating beating them - all at Fenway?

I agree with MaineCon about Pocatello. Bozeman is pretty but my God the cost of living there is crazy, housing and land is expensive, wages are low, but if the working is out of the equation and paddy is bringing steamer trunks full of cash from socal where he is used to that cost of living this will be nothing. The hunting and fishing are great. The area that MaineCon comes from Henry's Fork is beautiful and great fishing too. Island Park is also world renowned for fishing also.

The Rose Bud River might not run through the particular parcel but the river is very close. We should have fun with the ALDS, at least if the Sox can win one more - that last one's been kinda hard to get. Maybe we'll need to rely on the Angels to nail that last nail in the Ranger's coffin.
Can we still be friends afterward?
I think it could be a good series, especially if the Bosox can steal one in LaLa land.
Need Beckett and Lester to come up big. Bucholz has been really good until tonight (he gave up about 75 homers tonight), and Dice-K has pitched really well. The Bosox pitchers must keep the Angels off first because any single or walk will turn into a double quickly - especially if Tito lets Varitek behind the plate. Victor's not much better but at least he can hit.

Snow means my wife will start baking more things, although this year will be different seeing I'm now on a diet that I've done very well on, and the blood pressure is coming down slowly it is now 120over80, Doc wants me to lose weight, I've lost 10 lbs, but I told him at 6'3" 230 I'm pretty much lean, not much fat on a rock you know. Checking in on a Thursday morning
Getting to be autumn here in Northern New England. Leaves are turning, days are shorter and Friday nights the local teams tee it up at 7 PM. Nice. No snow yet though.
Big Sky. One of the greatest sounds in the world is the sound of an elk bugle through the cnayon through the thin mountain cold air on a cold October sunrise. Wow, that brings me back.
The Sox are claiming it's just a lack of intensity because there's been not much incentive to play well. The playoffs already being decided. It worries me, however, if the enter next week with no momentum while the other playoff teams roll into the playoffs.
Beckett was terrific nearly all year - not so much over the last month, but he's a proven playoff success and I have to believe he will respond again. Lester took a nasty liner off his right knee that knocked him out of his last start. Those two must step it up or it will be a short playoff for them
Their bats, which have apparently been stored until next week, must be dusted off as well.
I love playoff baseball...at least as long as my two favorite teams are still playing. My first being the Bosox, my second being whoever the Yankees are playing at the time.

Good morning....
I can report 40 degrees in SoCal this morning at 6:30 (near the beach). Fall comes to the West too! I love the Fall!
The Dodgers are no better than the Sox. They have had an opportunity to clinch in each of their last four games against The Pirates and Padres. Zippo....
Lastnight, they got a single in the first inning and that was it. It was like watching paint dry....
Now they have three against Colorado. If they get swept, Colorado gets the division and the Dodgers are the wild card. They are also in danger of losing best record in the NL.
Makes me want to grab a bat and go help.....!

Red Sox always seem to beat the Angels in the playoffs, which is weird because the Angels always seem to beat the Yankees in the playoffs. I don't think they'll get the chance this year: Boston in 4....Yanks in 3
Cardinals have owned the Dodgers in recent years, and that pitching....!: Cards in 4....Phillies in 4
The Series...a rematch of the first one I remember...Kenny Boyer wraps a grand slam around the left field foul pole as the Cards beat the Yanks. This year, the Yanks get their revenge in 6 games.
Of course, my heart says Dodgers over Sox in seven games...extra innings....on a close play.....by a nose.....

Paddy, my picks are similar
First off, I'll disagree with you and pick Favre and the Vikes to beat his old team by a touchdown. Actually that was a fairly easy pick since that game was last night.
As for the MLB playoffs, I 'll start with tonight's game - Twins complete the come from behind run and beat the Tigers. Detroit continues to break the hearts of their fans, who could use some good news...maybe next year - or concentrate on hockey.
I'm a die hard Bosox fan, and the Sox have had the Angel's number in the playoffs, nwhich will end at some point, and I fear this could be the year. Sox pitching has faltered a bit lately and if Lester, Beckett and Bucholz give these guys an inch, they're in for a disappointment. My heart says Sox in 5 but if I had to place money...never mind. I'll take the Sox in 5.
Yanks should have an easy time in the first round. They win in 4.
I just don't follow the NL that much so I'll say Cards in 4 and Rockies in 5 (they've been great down the stretch).
I'm hoping for a Sox-Yankee ALCS. Nothing better. Sox in 6.
The WS would be anti-climatic if the Sox get through NY in the ALCS. I'm going with a repeat of the 2007 Series and pick and all-wildcard WS with the Red Sox sweeping the Rockies.

I'm fine.....it gets easier after all this time. The hard part is when I remember the way it happened back then, but I just try to keep myself occupied.
In fact, I have a date with my other daughter tonight, so that will be nice....
I don't know why I even let that out, except that seppy piissed me off with his Dungy filth.
Thanks again, buddy. Hope all is well with you....

Hampton Inn with a room view of an amphitheather of fall colored mountains. Folks speak real easy to read AMERICAN, cook good AMERICAN and carry pistols ANYWHERE they wish except the courthouse and commissioner's office.
This is the first I've checked Drudge for news, quick trip to the main blog and now I'm boogying back to safety!

Hello
my friends, Glad to hear Neo had a great time on Vacation, Paddy and Maine it is always good to hear what is going on in your lives also. I've been staying out of trouble, blood pressure is steadily getting lower, now 118 over 78, I asked my Doc if I should buy now seeing in is low, you know buy low sell high rule. The snow is starting to accumulate, about a foot in most of the mountains around me. Got some nice news yesterday, going to be a grandpa again number 15, we are hoping this one might be a grand daughter seeing we have 12 grandsons and two grand daughters, I love them all but there is something special about the grand daughters, of course it might be more fun spoiling the girls. Well stay safe all, your in our prayers.

Congrats on the new addition to the family heading your way. I will pray for a healthy, happy granddaughter to add to that sorry group of meat eaters currently crowding your table....;-)
Seriously, there is something about a baby girl that brings out the protective nature in the men.....something rarely exhibited at the barber shop, pool hall, or stable..... It's a little miracle..... so all the best to the parents, etc.
I especially pray for any child brought into this world during these times, but I bet that's been said millions of times over thousands of years and the child who is the object of the prayer is never any the wiser.
All the best to you, pard.

Yes they are all a very special gift. I know that I worried about having kids when we got married, that this crazy world was going to swallow them up.I feel our kids have kicked the world in the azzzz, but now I worry about the grand kids even more, and they are all such strong little people that have so much to give, it makes one very proud to see your kids and their kids take their place in this crazy world, with their strength and their conviction to make this a better place for all of us. Have a great day Paddy.

Landlord...
Thank you for the stand-up comments at the Cheney thread. My 2-regrets in this life of any importance are 1.)Not having served and..2.)Not having had a child of my own.
Never have I ever--by any veteran, Left or Right--come across the vapid, silly, utterly illogical shiite that Aushwitiz Axie tries to hang on me. The bottomless NEED is a true 'hoot and I now know where to hit him very effectively..Thus, his newly assigned moniker. :-)
Apologies for mentioning the Vermin in this happy hall, Friend.

Okay, so I'm dreaming. But, stranger things have happened. Hell, right now, I'd be beyond delighted if the Halos would just beat'um tonight. 3-3 games with tomorrow the decider.
