"critics" = straw men

"Straw man" is used to describe setting up a hypothetical surrogate who will conveniently confirm everything you say. This is a logical fallacy that apparently pre-dates the printing press, but is still a favorite of the MSM. There are some interesting tidbits on fallacies over at the Evangelical Outpost.
