A Secular and a Christian Response to Homosexual Marriage

Ridiculous Bigotry and Hate

"What is happening is that once we, as a society, decide that "marriage" can be "re-defined' to whatever we want it to be , what we have really done is made "marriage" absolutely meaningless."

The argument is profoundly flawed because we are not massively redefining marriage. We are simply including the committed gay couples that comprise about 5% of our society. Ultimately, there is no coherent "secular" argument in opposition to gay marriage because one couple's gay marriage has no effect on anyone's "traditional" marriage.

The simple fact is that the vast majority of opponents are thus disposed for religious reasons. We were founded as a secular nation and religion is not supposed to become law. That's the Iranian culture - not ours. How many of the Ten Commandments are embodied in our laws? Two?

Marriage was once largely a polygamous concept. For most of history, it was more about property conveyance than anything else. Adding gays to the equation is a minor ripple in historical context in order to provide equal protection under the law.

The bottom line is that you have the right to practice - not impose - your religion. To the best of my knowledge, Neither Massachusetts, Connecticut. Iowa nor Vermont have spun off into space.

BTW, the same arguments were used in the Loving criminal trial leading to Loving v. Virginia:

"Almighty God created the races white, black, yellow, malay and red, and he placed them on separate continents. And but for the interference with his arrangement there would be no cause for such marriages. The fact that he separated the races shows that he did not intend for the races to mix."

You must be very proud of yourself.
