D-DAY: A HIGHER FORM OF COMPASSION

Redmeat

It does not take courage to assume that you are good while everyone else is evil. And if "global warming" is potentially destructive, then fighting it is a form of compassion.

What the troops did on D-Day was a very high form of compassion. But what Gandhi and King did also showed a very high degree of compassion. The same goes for Rachel Corrie as she stood in the way of a bulldozer on route to demolish a home with a family inside.

Finally, if D-Day compels Europe to agree with us and our foreign policies, then the sacrifices those troops made on that day and afterwards are relegated to that of dying to build an empire.

Hey Caday

It seems that you make many faulty comparisons and set up a few straw men to boot.

A scant few people willing to die for humanitarian causes in history is disappointing at best.

Assuming Nazi's are evil is a pretty safe assumption to anyone who has even a basic moral compass.

The legacy of D-day wasn't Some nationalist zealotry ( that you seem to be obsessed with) it was much more universal than that.

If you find Military might, repugnant

Then you should never pretend to honor it....If you want to be consistent.

Asserting they honor those who sacrificed while belittling their cause is the method those like C5 use to try and claim they hold a more moral high ground.
C5 is an unabashed anti-war zealot by his own statements at his blog site. That he can only express contempt for the military is to be expected. He often tries to disguise that contempt with half-hearted recognition of their sacrifices - always followed by a "but..." and then drawing some sort of moral equivalence with unrelated events, often outlandishly overreaching in his attempt to put a point on a billiard ball.
In the end, he only succeeds in proving himself completely devoid of any moral compass other than what makes him feel superior in his own mind.
I call this pathetic display of building ones own pedestal to stand on "mental masturbation".

I fully agree with praising what the troops did on that day. I don't think fighting to liberate is the only way to show extreme compassion. Extreme compassion is based on one's willingness to sacrifice, many who do not fight do show such compassion.

The point is this, we can overgeneralize on the compassion shown on D-Day to other wars, which is unwarranted. Or we could put in the same category, those who willingly put their lives at risk to help others. These include those troops on d-day and it includes first responders and it includes some activists as well as those bring medical supplies to unstable areas. What all have in common is the willingness to risk one's life to help others. I would like to read why you think the comparisons I am making are faulty.

Finally, again if our gov't can demand subservience from Europe because of past sacrifices, it is our gov't that is relegating the sacrifices, not the troops who participated.

Since I said:

"What the troops did on D-Day was a very high form of compassion. But what Gandhi and King did also showed a very high degree of compassion. The same goes for Rachel Corrie as she stood in the way of a bulldozer on route to demolish a home with a family inside"

how did I show contempt for the troops? It sounds like you are ignoring what I said to include me in some stereotype you have of anti-war zealots. BTW, many of those same zealots are veterans.

the same courage

that lead the Northern soldiers and veterans to re elect Lincoln and continue the horrific meat grinder because, they knew it must be done. God bless the USA.
