A great bit of history with which to start the day!
The amazing thing is back then, men and women had no other choice but to give their all in dire circumstances. There was no other option for her but to get the crew to San Francisco. We can learn a lot from her example.
Of course, had it been me, I would have thrown the former first mate overboard.

Another good book
Thanks for the story.
Here's another good book, an autobiography from the 1800's: TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST, by Richard Henry Dana, Jr. Two places noted that the author visited on his voyage, was San Pedro & San Francisco. I especially enjoyed reading it while I was in the Navy. I lived in San Pedro while stationed in Long Beach, CA, and I was living in the Bay area & attending SFSU while stationed in Alameda, CA. It was fascinating to read descriptions of these places, circa early 1830's.

Sounds like a good stem
for a screenplay. When you get it done, don't forget to let me know. I am a director, and I'd love to do it!!!

Thanks for your comments.
I actually own TWO YEARS BEFORE THE MAST, but have not had the chance to read it yet. It is now in the top 20 of my read pile, so probably sometime in the next year I will get to it.
Speaking of maritime books and novels, have you read any of the series of stories on which the movie MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD was based?

Tell you what I would like to see a script made of, and that's the story behind the hymn IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL. I would love to see either a movie or a decent stage production of that story.

I haven't read any of the MASTER & COMMANDER series, but you've pushed it up my reading list. A friend from church has recommended it to me.
Ditto on your comments on the Horatio Spafford hymn. Would that I display such faith & joy in the minor bumps in life, much less the tragedy he experienced.
Have a great weekend. :-)

Curtal Friar..
I am the song leader at my Primitive Baptist Church and often lead the congregation in "It Is Well With My Soul".
Please, if you will, make a post outlining a brief history as you referred to for that hymn. I would consider it a personal favor.
Sincerely,
Glenn Flowers

This story makes you realize the importance today of the US Navy and Coast Guard. The Coast Guard motto says it all ("Semper Paratus", Always Ready).
Also, I would be interested in the brief history of the hymn: "It Is Well With My Soul". Please place a post at my blog too! (Thanks glnflwrs!)
Also more articles up at my blog.
Stop by if you get a chance.
