You are right about 2 Peter 2:1-3, it says it all. But we have gotten to a point where so called believers do not want to hear sound doctrine, they want to hear what makes them feel all tingly! The Gospel is simple, but living a true Christian life is sometimes hard, and the road is rough. I am afraid that more so-called Christians ae being led astray by these people than are being saved. I mean, how can a shepherd tend a flock of 5000 sheep? You cannot know all of your sheep and will not know if any have fallen away or are being menaced by the wolves; there are just too many for you to account for. So if you have that many sheep to care for, are you really caring for them...or are you just witing to harvest their wool?

Too broad a brush ...
you paint with Flagwaver. I've read and enjoyed your posts in the past and this is the first time I've visited your blog. The broad brush with which you paint mega-churches splatters a bit too much for my tastes.
The church I attend here in central Kentucky, Southland Christian Church, is of the size you state, but not on the order of being Jesus-lite. To be sure, many of the Sunday messages are geared to seekers, but there is no shortage of preaching the true gospel and challenging believers to get involved so as to help grow their faith.
There is no one, sure fire, way to organize and run a church. The biggest sticking point is whether the particular body stays true to the gospel. Other than that, it's all just flavors of ice cream (do you like hymns or contemporary worhip, communion every week, or just once in a while, etc.). Our current Senior Minister, Jon Weece, never fails to challenge the congregation to be the hands and feet of Christ.
I didn't plan on being defensive, but I guess that's the way this will come across. My intent was to inform you that size doesn't automatically make a church body either good or bad. Your article above sure sounded like someone who has been burned by a larger church and you've got a bone to pick.
As I stated before, I enjoy your posts when I come across them. I just think you should paint with a #000 brush instead of a #7 chisel tip. Maybe some very good churches wouldn't been demeaned by the splatter.

I so agree
with what you wrote and I think of all the most vulnerable people who are sitting at home debilitated or forlorn who send money to these guys.
I think it is a con form. This probably sounds offensive but that's how I feel about it.

Idea for an article
How about the feminization of the church and the lack of men in the pews? As a deeply religious man, I would like to hear your thoughts on this.
Mega churches mean mega money. Not hard to figure this out, is it?

I understand that you feel that I am painting with too broad a brush, but I stand by what I wrote. I do not contend that all mega churches are bad, and I have not been "burned" by one in my life. I just fail to see how a man can actually be a pastor to a flock of sheep that he does not know. IMO a pastor is supposed to be more than just the guy that has his name on the marquee and delivers the sermon on Sunday; I see that as a position where you have to be a counselor, a friend, an advocate, and a true spiritual guide. You cannot be that when you are trying to ride herd on 5000 or more members!
If you are happy with your church, then that's fine with me. If your pastor is adhering to true Bible based taeching and doctrines then that is great! I simply see too many of the mega church pastors that are not preaching the Word, but are all about giving people sweet sounging words bereft of good doctrine.
If you think I'm wrong, I'll tell you what you can do: this week check out Joel Osteen or T.D. Jakes, or any of the other megachurch pastors out there. See how many times they give the real Gospel of Christ to their listeners and how much they seem to tailor the message to make the masses happy, then let me know what YOU see.

Agreed
It is gauche to use baser instincts to sell your message. Why can't these preachers inspire people to higher motivations than that?

Michaelangelo Did Jesus A Disservice
That picture I see hanging in so many homes of the pale, blue eyed, almost effeminate hands is a real corker.
Hey! Jesus was a carpenter. I was a framer just long enough to put it in my list of favorite things just above concrete work and just below a sharp stick in the eye.
He walked everywhere he went. Sounds like he might have been in pretty good shape when He threw the moneychangers out. He was a Mediterranean. How many blue-eyed blonde Mediterraneans have you seen? I mean before Rommel's Afrika Korps arrived??
He really doesn't sound like that picture portrays. I know I wouldn't want to pizz him off!
