Sirs,
I just watched the video of one of your officers (Cheeks) forcing a demonstrator (Jim Moran) to put down his sign at an event that took place on 25 August at a townhall meeting in Reston. Evidently this meeting took place on a school property.
There are several problems here that I can see. First of all, a "townhall" meeting is a civic event that supersedes the school's normal purpose as an educational facility. If First Amendment rights of protest are going to be denied based on purported school "rules" of conduct in some fashion, then those meetings should be held in another venue. In my opinion, though, that's moot, as the "townhall" function endows any and all attendees with all their normal rights, regardless of any "rules" that may prevail during the school's normal operating hours. At the time of this meeting, the school wasn't in operation as an educational facility.

Further, it seems Moran was singled out for special attention by your officer because his sign included a picture of Obama. Apparently other signs that DIDN'T have pictures were deemed "acceptable" for some reason, and weren't forced out of sight. This is very clearly discriminatory. There's no law anywhere of which I'm aware that grants law enforcement personnel the power to make decisions on what is and is not "proper" signage to bring to a public event to express protest, or any other point of view for that matter, as long as that sign doesn't violate normal laws concerning decency (no extreme nudity, for example).
In this day and age of ubiquitous video capture and YouTube, I'd think you'd be more diligent in assuring your officers don't violate people's constitutional rights, as there's a good chance it'll be widely available for viewing all over the internet. I live in Southern California, for example, just about as far away from Reston as one can be and still be in the continental US.
I'd be very interested in hearing any response you may have. Please feel free to respond to this email if you wish.

Dear GunnyG
Officer Cheek is a disgrace to all of us who have served in law enforcement.
The objective of a police force is to provide professional assistance to law abiding citizens. We, the citizens, hire them and grant them a measure of authority- on trust- to perform a duty that we ourselves are responsible for, but haven't the time or training to normally accomplish. It is a VAST trust that a policeman must constantly live up to in service to his fellow citizens.
It should also be remembered that police forces are a relatively new institution. Before the mid 19th Century, it was the urban custom to organize "Night Watches" of volunteer citizens- who were usually recompensed by donations from local merchants. The Metropolitan Police Force was largely the result of London in Victorian times.
The danger, as always, is that a corrupted police group can become unaccountable and thus become public masters instead of public servants. And, when the citizenry finds itself disarmed as a "public safety" measure, they become utterly dependant on the police for their protection. This is how the seeds of the "police state" are sown.
The vast majority of police officers are not only fine men, but unsung heroes in the unending war against crime. But their leadership and ranks are being infiltrated by unamerican elements as never before. Officer Cheek is one such element.

Of course this Wesley Cheeks should be immediately stripped of his badge and gun and forbidden from employment as an officer of the law permanently. But is doubtful this will happen. Since libs love "re-education" so much, why not ask to re-educate this officer about the Constitution, and how to treat the "minority" (who are actually the majority) of conservatives out there? Call it a "sensitivity" module for how to treat conservatives.

If W. tried to form a "civilian taskforce," I wonder what the response would have been from the MSNBC's of the world? I imagine something between outrage and a brain hemmorage.
While I'm glad the troops are finally starting to rally, I think we need to begin planning a united agenda. The criticism that we have nothing to offer is still valid. It's not enough to be opposed. We must have a counter-proposal.

You people act like this just started happening.
You make me ill.
This schidt has been going on forever but you have chose to ignore it.
Heretofore any time there has been a confrontation and there has been publicity...when the cop has got up andf made his case you have believed without reservation what the cop said.
People go into jury rooms thinking, not saying but thinking, that the accused MUST be guilty or else he/she wouldn't be here in the first place.
I remember stops, searches and seizures where the cop went around and broke out a taillight to give reason for the stop. Try convincing a jury of that.
I rode Harleys before yuppies discovered Harleys and any time more than two of us rode together we could expect a 'felony' stop complete with the 12 guage coming out. The term "throwdown gun" came into vogue because Houston cops carried a weapon they could put next to the body to claim self defense.
So now because an Obamaite cop threatens someone you want to beieve this never has happened before. You people are brave, patriotic and naieve. Obama's "Civilian Security Force" is already in place. They may have sworn an oath to poretect and defend the Constitution but their real allegiance is to the AG and the POTUS.
They will reek havoc on you and the populace will stand mutely by. Because they are law enforcement.
Think Waco. Think Ruby Ridge.

lower your hackles brother! haha. I've been riding harleys since 1979 and have been hasseled MANY times, as you say, when 2 or more of us were together, especially in g-damn New Jersey.
This is how Americans are, waiting till the threat is right in front of them. I was p*ssed about Ruby Ridge and furious about Waco and wrote several letters to the FBI and USAG about the FBI sniper Horichuri.
As BrianR says, now it's documented and THAT is why I was telling people to take video cameras to Tea Parties, etc.

Buck, I Disagree.....
Perhaps a year ago, the public would have stood "mutely" by. Too much has changed in that year. My real fear is that some one will start the "ball game" pre-mature fashion and things will get bloody in a hurry.
The 9/12 protest is a prime example. We all know that many Conservatives will be "packing". (If I were able to go, I know that I'd be carrying a "belly" gun.)
If something starts (i.e., an "Obama" cop has an ego trip and tries to confiscate a sign or even a weapon), things can and probably will get out of hand.
Perhaps it is time. But I fear that a revolution that was started in this manner is not as powerful as the Revolution that started in 1775 when the British fired first while trying to illegally confiscate arms and ammunition.

I didn't notice that anyone at that school was creating a public disturbance, much less rioting. You're attempting to create a moral equivalence between policemen trying to quell a violent mob or a felonious criminal with one who is being intrusive into the constitutional rights of his fellow citizens. On that basis, I can't help but think that your "libertarianism" would more accurately be described as "anarchism".
