What the religion says is irrelevant if that is no longer what is practiced. There is a problem when thousands (and likely many more) people believe that are empowered by Islam to force all other beliefs to submit and kill all people who refuse. Christianity went through the Reformation and stopped all the nonsense about burning heretics and having governments based on religion. Islam needs a Reformation.
