I don't think that is quite it

But it's wholly appropriate for Americans to expect their leaders to appreciate the central concept upon which this nation was founded.


I think it is merely a question of voters wanting a candidtae to whom they relate more. As 85-90% of this country practices some sort of religous faith, it seems reasonable to think they would vote for a candidate who likewise does. Lets face it the majority of voters in this country have ZERO idea of what concepts this country was founded on, so why would a candidates understanding of them be appealing to the majority.

Also, although I am certainly no team elephant member the Mormon thing is being way ocverblown. Growing up my best friend was mormon, I never got what the big deal was.

You're probably right about that (especially if Jay Leno's man-on-the-street act is an accurate barometer!).
