A Democrat talks about taxes

I read your blurb and I guess you think that Democrats will raise your taxes. I am a Democrat and proud to be one at that. The Democratic party is and always has been the party of the middle class. I prepare taxes for a living so it is a subject I am familiar with. You may remember that George Bush got some Democratic support for his tax bill(I think he got about 10 Democrats). He did this by giving in to Democratic ideas for middle class tax cuts. These included such items as the child credit and educational breaks. Although he now claims credit for many of these things they probably never would have happened if he didn't want have some Democrats on board. Without these items the bill would have consisted of cutting the top bracket by the biggest percent, the next lower bracket by a lesser percent and so on. However, when the bill as passed got to the 15% bracket, that bracket stayed at 15%. The 15% bracket is where 70% of the American people reside. The Repubican idea was to concentrate the most tax relief in percentage terms in the upper brackets. Give some crumbs to the average guy and give the cake to the big money people making say 200,000 or more a year. Nobody named Joe voter should be in favor of tax plans that treat the average guy so unfairly.
The Republicans are also real keen on getting rid of the estate tax. The tax first proposed by Teddy Roosevelt basically only effects the top 2% or less of taxpayers. All thier arguments for getting rid of this tax are baloney. If they can sell getting rid of this tax as a top priority they can sell ice to eskimoes. Just about all the estate tax returns I have prepared have to do with people having large stock portfolios or large holdings in real estate. To the best of my knowledge the average small business or farm has virtually no chance of being effected by this tax. The Republicans make the argument that why should you pay a death tax on money that has already been taxed. The average guy pay sales taxes on money that has already been taxed and somehow this is o.k.
Basically, if the Republicans get thier way people like Paris Hilton can live off dividends that will be taxed at 15% during thier lifetimes and pass thier huge stock portfolios on to thier shiftless children tax free so they can pay the minimum 15% on thier dividends. Meanwhile the average guy who works for a living pays 15 - 30% on his salary. It is any wonder that when George Bush says how much the tax cuts have helped the American people, the average guy doesn't relate.
