Russian Army Invades Georgia

I have been watching this this morning

and I feel that Russia is asserting itself while it can, before NATO membership makes Georgia a protected state. Perhaps they are even doing this to keep the EU from accepting Georgia.

I also read that Georgia has 2000 troops in Baghdad suburbs and is one of the former eastern bloc nations that has been most supportive of Bush in Iraq. As a consequence, apparently there are around 100 Americans in Georgia training the military according to the London Times article I read.

According to other reports, Bush is or has met with Putin in China to warn him to stop, and McCain harshly condemned this and Russia. Don't forget as well that our Sec of State is a Soviet expert, this is where her education focused, in this area of the world. Things could get very interesting and scary.

Those Ole' Ruskies

Up to the same old crap again

BTW

You're back! hope the testing went well.

BTC oil pipeline

You're right, this is one of many reasons for this situation. NATO, missle shield, energy, it's a mass all adding up to Russian dominance of the region. This could very well be a "real quagmire" like the Balkans.

No war for oil!!

Man, don't Putin and Medvedev know that the French are going to really dislike them if they go into Georgia unilaterally?? Did they even consult with the UN???

I'll be sitting by my TV set waiting for stories of protests and flower children parading in Red Square with their signs. Maybe the good people of San Fransisco will hold a "Solidarity Protest" for the people of Russia?

"No War for Oil!" (unless it's by a communist state)
"Putin Lied, People Died!" (again)

wil

Amen to that ("Things could get very interesting and scary.")

And they could get both in a hurry. If Georgia hits the Russians hard enough, the Russians will send in more troops and I am afraid the US will get involved to aid the Georgians.

boaz

It reminds me of Czechoslovakia in 1968.

See my replies to you on your blog concerning my work.

davecatbone

BTC oil pipeline!

Hence my suggestion of a plan conceived by Russia and Iran.

Redhead

Don't hold your breath!

The US MSM (except FOX) is being real quiet about this. This type of "unrest" does not help O"Vomit.

Redhead

Awesome comment. Unfortunately only the US is held under that kind of scrutiny.

Nothing New

Russia has been flexing its muscles to those who even give the appearance of wanting any kind of independence for a while.

Gray Ghost

To some one like Putin, should he take control of this region,it would be like eating potato chips. Can't stop with just one.Or,Putin ,like the Blues Brothers, just wants to put the band back together. In an election year,I would not think ANY U.S. elected official would go on record stating we should become militarily involved.BTW,is it just me,or that the sound of crickets coming out of Turtle Bay? Hmmm....

From the token liberal on the board

The response comes as predicted.

Yawn...

One of my thoughts

was confirmed by one of the retired colonels on Fox News today. He said that the Russians had 5 divisions of the army, plus air and naval assets, in place and in action almost immediately. That doesn't "just happen". It takes time to mobilize and move those formations. This whole thing smells of a set-up like the old KGB was always ready to arrange...and who used to be a top mutt at KGB?

Amen Crawfish!

The Russians have had this plan in place for at least 3 to 4 months, and possibly a year.

They are "p*ssed" that Georgia is getting friendly with the West, talks about an anti-missle defense with the USA, and the idea of Georgia joining NATO.

Gray Ghost

Good morning, just catching up and I agree the Russians are jealous of any contact that any formery occupied territory of the late great USSR has outside its bounds. They just can't handle it. Putin must be very troubled and going out of his mind as PM, that's one man I wouldn't trust near me! Eyes as steely and conniving as a paid killer. We need to watch their every move and their willingness to supply uranium to Iran and all other non-friendlies!

STR8 TALK

Hi! Great to hear from you!

I have been very busy with work and family.

Yes, I agree about Putin. He is definitely the type I wouldn't trust unless he were dead.

well, we have our hands tied militarily

So we will have to be subversive. Back to the future (CIA ops). Whatever happens, we need Georgia to stay strong. We will need them in the future, just like Iraq. Some people can see down the road and some can't.

GG

It's just Russians being Russians. Putin knows the U.S. doesn't have the assests to go to war, the money to fund it, and that the public probably wouldn't support it. He sees a weak president on the horizon and knows he has Europe dependent on Russian energy. From his perspective I'd do the same thing.

GG and everyone

I invite you all to the"corner" to read my post on the Georgia situation. Putin has been planning this long ago. He wants the Soviet empire back and Georgia was his first target.

I've been telling people

ever since Russia sent uranium to Iran those two were "in bed together." They are definitely up to no good!

Finally posted the 2nd half of my vacation, lest I forget. ;)

SP

Yes, we do have our hands ties militarily, in more ways than one (Iraq, Afghanistan, Congress, the LibTurds, etc.).

You are correct, we will need Georgia down the road. Personally, I am uncertain rather or not we should send in a small group of troops and see rather or not Russia backs off. Wars have been started for less.

However, I believe that at this moment in time the Russian Bear is not the same Bear as 30 years ago. I would therefore give diplomacy a small chance (1 or 2 weeks) and then send in a small "Peace-Keeping" force.

Reports from the front lead me to believe that the Russian Air Force "sucks" big time and their armored forces are not much better. Perhaps Putin will realize this and back off with pressure from Bush and the US.

Sgt Relic

I concede that the US is in a "bad" place to negotiate from a position of strength.

But the Russian forces look like the Keystone Cops. Putin would have a better chance if he had the same military from 30 years ago.

crossbow

I will be over this morning.

I agree on South Ossetia, but not the rest of Georgia, not yet. Putin cannot afford another Afghanistan.

str8 talk

I will be over this morning.

yes, GG

Russia doesn't bother me much (right now) militarily speaking. Diplomacy sure. Undermining them the whole time YES. However, the gangster in charge IS trying to get the energy supplies (OIL) which is as good as a mighty military these days. That's what we have to watch out for.

And The French Prez Comes Home

Waving a piece of paper and proclaimaing, "Peace in our time."

Uh, this is where I came in.

Has the Russian Bear Forgot...

...about the Stinger missles? Plus there has been some other fantastic little toys that've been developed over the years that will make sshort work of a T72 tank or Hind helicopter.
stop by GG. New post. Like your opinion. DD
