No More Storytellers

Sam - one of the first people I thought of after reading your essay was Erskine Caldwell. (I think you said you were distantly related?)

Mr. Caldwell was a wonderful storyteller. One of the most vivid memories of "Tobacco Road" was the little girl running down a path or road with an envelope, shouting, "We-uns got a letter! We-uns got a letter!

The old storytellers are still there. I believe, however, that computers have knocked them out of relevance except to people like me.

Then, too, most people didn't have fathers who read the newspaper to them every eveniing, either! (About the war -- WWII.)

Where are those fathers now?

LOST A QUOTATION MARK

Missed one after the last "We-uns got a letter!"

Yes SF, a distant relative but one I heard a lot about as you can imagine.
We remember very well those like the father you write of, and the question of where they are now is a haunting one.
