I think they know exactly what they are doing. I think they are counting on the amendment to either fail in November, or that if it DOES pass, the SCOTUS will knock it down in part due to the "marriages" licensed between now and and whenever the issue makes it to the SCOTUS. After all, if people has a "right" to those marriage licenses, how can that be taken away after they have them?
And if the California situation can't be taken to the SCOTUS, the licensing being extended to out-of-state couples who come to California to get "married" will at least "force" changes in marriage licensing in other states when the couples return to them, and will quite possibly reach the SCOTUS through THOSE cases.

Many states have voted to keep marriage. How many have voted to change marriage licensing? It's all about the courts, and it is very scary.
