A Bible study on poverty

Just two questions
First, what happens to those poor old ladies if there is no family, church, youth group, or volunteer to take them shopping? Do we leave them to fend for themselves, to die?
Second question, you said "Anything that gets in my (or your) way of the pursuit of happiness is in direct contradiction of the Founders' intent. Freedom was their major interest in the design of our government. With every additional tax or regulation, we lose a bit of that freedom."
Does that mean you oppose laws outlawing drug use, prostitution, abortion, speeding, smoking in public, etc? I could name a hundred things, and someone will say that those laws prevent their "pursuit of happiness."
Who gets to decide which is a criminal act and which is a pursuit of happiness?

I would maintain that we all have families, friends, and neighbors. And there are churches everywhere, and taking care of folks is what we do.
When a law prohibits an activity by one person or group that infringes upon the rights of another, then it is probably a just law. When it takes the property of one person and gives it to someone else, that is stealing.
I hope this clears things up for you.

Stealing
I am not so sure. In my part of the country there are lots of "seniors" who live alone. In the summer there are stories of them dying in their apartments/houses because of heat stroke, and in the winter freezing to death.
So, I am not sure that we ALL have someone to help us when we need it.
As for the laws, none of the activities I mentioned infringes on the rights of others but they are still illegal, aren't they?
If I want to use my body, for money, in a pursuit of happiness why does the government care?
If a woman wants to marry a woman, in the pursuit of happiness, why does the government care?
If I want to use my money to buy drugs, in a pursuit of happiness, why does the government care?
As for the government taking money from one person and giving it to another, the government has been doing that since before there was a government. When we pay our taxes, some of it goes to the elected officials, to support people in other counties, the police (so they can enforce laws that restrict my/your "pursuit of happiness"), to subsidize farmers, banks, automakers, some of it goes to educate the children of others, some of it goes to projects that benefit only a small number people, etc.
"Stealing" our money is the number one concern of government, it always has been and always will be.

"In the summer there are stories of them dying in their apartments/houses because of heat stroke, and in the winter freezing to death."
We have stories after every apartment fire that "those poor people lost everything they had." But it doesn't make it so. They have their lives, their health, and their knowledge. They still have their jobs, and they have the same opportunities. They can rebuild.
"As for the government taking money from one person and giving it to another, the government has been doing that since before there was a government."
With all due respect, the income tax did not appear until 1913, and the government operated within its means with modest surpluses every year. We still had cold winters and hot summers, but we used wood stoves and had no fans or air conditioners. Somehow, we survived.
When in doubt, look to the Constitution, Luna. It is the supreme law of the land. It defines our government and limits its powers. The individual states and the people have the ultimate power.
Lately, we are seeing more and more people looking to the federal government to solve ALL of our problems. That is not what the United States was founded for.

Good Post, Trek.
The bible states "A man that shall not work shall not eat". It instructs the CHURCH to take care of widows and children; not the government. It aso says "Thou shall not steal"
Our laws and Constitution are based on the Bible's Ten Commandments. So, when in doubt, the Bible offers answers as to what's right or wrong and who's responsible for caring for the needy, etc.
