would ride fence before they would tend sheep.
And riding fence was the lowest job on the range. It was kinda like building your own scaffold.

My grandfather was a real cowboy.

Back in the late 1800's and early into the last century. Late on he was foreman of a large ranch north of Fort Worth. He got paid $50.00 a month, quarters for his family (wife, 3 children) and permission to run 50 head of his own cattle. He also would arrive at the bunkhouse unexopected and confiscate any playing cards he saw. Whether they were in use or not.
