The Old Gray Lady: Today's Tabloid Tramp

The NY Times was once the paper of record--especially in the coverage of foreign affairs. I remember devouring two-day old editions at the San Jose State library back in the 70s. As a young reporter for my old college daily, I sold a story to the Times--one of my happiest moments as a reporter (during by BC days).

Last night I saw the bulletin on Fox News that the paper was going to run a story about Sen. McCain. I moved to the internet and found the story. I was astonished. Not at the tired, unfounded rumor of McCain "relationship" with a lobbyist, but over the fact that it was an old rehash of an old rumor. No attribution. Just back alley gossip. This kind of stuff used to be beneath the dignity of the NY Times even when a given story was fully backed up by objective data and reliable sources. They always used to let the Daily News or Post run this kind of tabloid crap. The Times was proud to claim that it catered to the educated, cosmopolitan reader. Alas, not so anymore.

If I was running Starbucks (which carries same-day editions of the paper) I would terminate all subscriptions immediately. And so it goes--Blessings, John

The Slimes

One has to read Jonah Goldberg's book, Liberal Fascism to see how, why, the Times, the Post, the Globe, the LA mess, post their leftist opeds as facts. It is scary that even when I wan a kid in the 1950's, I could not stand the Times and their hero, Walter Lippmann.
