This is prickly situation

On the one hand the Dalai Lama is not calling for a boycott of the Olympic Games. The decision to participate should rest with the U.S. Olympic Team since they are the most effected in a tangible sense.

One of the demands by the Chinese has been for the Dalai Lama to acknowledge that Tibet is an inalienable part of China. That demand also includes Taiwan which makes it very much a matter of U.S. interest.

The question is not whether the President should become involved so much as how far is prudent. We are a huge customer of the Chinese but they are an even bigger creditor of the United States. The demands of the Dalai Lama are not unreasonable but he must be committed to taking part in a resolution, as we must be committed to being involved in a peaceful resolution.

sarge, did you see...

awhile back, on the mclaughlin group, the discussion of the chicom's military buildup? china is starting to become a little bit scary.

Do you think so?

Naw! A two hundred million man Army is nothing to worry about. Now if they start building enough transportation to move them....?

but part of their military...

is still supposed to be horribly obsolete.

Dont Count On It

The elite has had no problem with China's social system. Bush will be happy to join the party in Beijing and wont be shedding any tears over a bunch of pious yak-herders, child slaves, adult political prisoners, environmental disasters, forced abortions or corrupt crony-capitalism. The big argument between the US and the Chicoms is floating the Yuan or Renminbi or whatever they're calling their currency these days, against the dollar. The political and business elites have been shocked that their helots have been so discourteous to their fellow statists in China, and in San Francisco worked to thwart the demonstrators at every turn.

Its The Russians Who Should Worry

Chinese expansionism would naturally focus on the increasingly empty and resource-filled regions to the north. As Russia's population continues to crash China will turn its eyes northward. I dont think WW2 style war is supportable by a country with a one-child policy. That one child, anti female policy will be China's downfall.

I understand

what is going on in China...it's China being China, but I am not sure what good would be accomplished by Bush snubbing them. They may lost face but they are not going to change their ways because we stay home and pout. Now Iran may be a problem we can do something about and even N. Korea, although neither is going to suddenly turn around but, no matter how we may be disgusted or repelled by China's policies, nothing we do is going to change them.

skep

oh wow I never thought of the possibility of China menacing Russia. Do you really think it would be worth it to them? Trying to control a territory that large, even if they did it piece by piece, would be daunting, I would think.

beltway girl

It is now safe to return to Doc Steech's place. I have claimed victory (sounds of dancing and celebrating) so it won't be long until he gets a new cartoon up.

oh, dear, God, thank you...

sarge, for de-goreing doc's site. one of the usual suspects will hopfefully be the subject of the next one, giving me a chance to wash the gore out of my system...
