Will no longer exist when this country loses to liberalism. Dave's article and the embedded article expose the risks to the survival of Catholic health care systems. If these hospitals close, so will medical schools like Georgetown, St. Louis, Loyola, Marquette, and Fordham....along with associated non Jesuit schools. the issues at hand are not only abortion, but contraception, sterilization, and in vitro fertilization.

I can give you several sites that reinforce exactly what SP states. The issues that I tried to expose were the changes from the platform to the reality of Obama'a plan. Family/primary care/ internal medicine docs are going broke from all of the regulation and litigation. They are also leaving their practices because Medicare sets the standards for reimbursement... and it is going down drastically. Specialty doc are in a slightly better position.
Sheila: Some docs and alot of academics are extremely liberal. They voted for Obama based on the health promotion aspect and voluntary part of the platform....and they slit their own throats.

Of course it is going to be taxes. Check the article for the hyperlink....very interesting. Baucus is Chair of the Finances Committee which oversees 50% of the taxes. Therefore, he will oversee the dolling out the money. The catch is that there will be subsidies that were not included in the original estimates because individuals enrollment was voluntary, now the proposal is mandatory...and they will get lower rates once the government monopolizes the health insurance aspect of the health care industry. Then the hospital systems will be mandated, and you can figure out the rest.

He also made it known recently that he would shut down all media that supported his opposition (ex-wife).
Going back to Dave's comment and his post, this could devastate not only health insurance, but also Catholic and faith based health care. Here in NJ there is a densely populated area with a high Ultra Orthodox Jewish population and they have their own physicians and a clinic that reflect their values ( procreation and anti-abortion). This would devastate the federally qualified healthcare centers that they support.

Now they plan to kill health care. I expect in 5 years (if this plan goes thru) that the Baptist and Catholic health care systems will be gone. In 10 years, St. Jude and LaBonners Childrens Hospitals in Memphis will have to close down.
Mildred, you have a point, even the fine medical schools (like Loyola) will have to close because of the abortion issue and others.
Short of a split between the Red States and Blue States and the forming of a second country, I see no way to stop it.

Another very good, informative post. The US is about to enter the downward spiral of universal health care. Are people not aware of the health care issues/problems from government run health care in Canada and the UK, for example! You are right on with the oxymoron of government run! Haha! Any thinking person who has watched and has been aware of the financial meltdown/bailout fiasco over the last two months must have an inkling that Congress is useless and clueless to fix problems/provide solutions. Now they want universal healthcare. With no money and no jobs, there may be a chance to postpone/defeat this. At least until 2010. Good luck to us!

These systems thrive in blue states like California, and many southern states like Florida. They will unsustainable because they will not be able to compete with providing services and the coverage issues. You see, providers have the option of being Medicare providers. That means that they accept Medicare as payment in full. Non perticipants have the option of submitting to a secondery carrier or billing the individual for payment in full. Many of these propritery providers are the latter and not the former. This issue will bring lobbyists to Washington in droves.

There a numerous Catholic/Christian healthcare systems and education institutions that will rail against this. Then you have the issue of states rights. The federal government will be caught in the issue of forcing states to provide services that they chose to regulate. Example, NJ (most heavliy regulated state in US for healthcare)certifies what institutions can perform what procedures. In this case, the federal government should not interfere with state rights associated with reimbursement.

Government Health Care
People are ignorant of history and cannot understand what will happen if our federal government operates the HC system. There are university educated people who still insist that Cuba has a wonderful system even with the absurdity that they can supply anything worthwhile for $230 per person per year when a decent SMA-24 type blood battery is more than $400. A MRI is about $1200.

Following Rush Limbaugh, the government cannot create anything and can only ration and destabilize the current system. Do we want our HC system to be run like HUD or Amtrak or Social Security? A lot of our citizens do.
There will be a two-tier HC system if the government gets in where the public gets poor HC and private providers offer the best. That means something like an $800 per month tax burden from government and a similar number of private care.
We cannot afford this. But, that will not stop socialism. Ask the idiots in Europe the following question: Do you like socialism and think your government has your best interests in mind?
The drooling fools will say 'yes.'
We need for places like California to collapse and show that government like that is a mistake. But, many 'poor' will believe.
Half of the population cannot cope with capitalism and will vote for your wealth.

Comment: At this point, we are not a communist country, yet. Currently, the Catholic bishops are taking a strong stand against the social issues that will effect their values as a private institution. They have stated their reaction could includ closing their health facilities, which include hospitals and many provide meical education.
Take that argument to your constitutional right for life liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Children will be denied their right to pursue life and happiness when they suffer from terminal illnesses because of the rationing of what will become scarce resources such as St. Judes. Many will not be free from pain and suffering as a result of scarce resources. The list goes on, but one can see the slippery slope that natioanl healthcare brings us to. We can continue this discussion in 3 segments..denial of constitutional rights, pragmatic basis, and separation of Church and state.

The waits for health care will be so long that a patient will die before being treated without enough professionals. Professionals will not want to work under this system of course.
But, then again, he may not be able to implement anything once the first dirty bomb goes off shortly after his inauguration.

How much longer will the lines be when the Catholic bishops close hospitals because of the conflict with the Humanae Vitae? After my post, the Bishops made that suggestive statement and the effect will also cause the closure of Catholic based medical schools and then the faith based nonprofit hospitals will be next. There are several prominant Orthodox Jewish Hospitals in the country, with similar social beliefs.
This is a dangerous slope, the intended consequence is to provide health insurance to 40 mil. The unintended consequence is to prevent life liberty, and the pursuit of happiness to the remaining 250 mil. These are the 3 basic rights guaranteed in the Constitution. Aside from a violation, it is egalitarion as opposed to utilitarian.

This would be a tragedy in huge proportions if the Catholic hospitals are closed down. My favorite hospital in my OH area was Mercy Hospital run by the Mercy nuns of course and if I could not pay off the bill right away, they worked with me to make payments I could afford. I would hate to see the loss of these hospitals. What a shame.

Pepp & Sue: Healthcare v. Constitution
My mandating that all individuals "must buy healthcare" violates our rights under the constitution to "liberty and the pursuit of happiness". This creates an opression that interferes with the individuals "right to chose" and the "right to privacy". Sound like a familiar argument. And where is the ACLU to defend this constitutional violation?
It also violates the separation of Church and state. If the Bishops chose not to continue healthcare based on the premise that the federal government monopolizes the third party payer system, the fear is that their regulation "may" extend to forcing Catholic and faith based systems that oppose controversial issues to provide services in order to participate in their program.

Now we here Kennedy has been behind the scenes for almost a year and a half creating a bill that will cover all. Has he looked at the MA plan and how well that is working out?

The only reason that I can think of is that these are individual proposals from legislators and not to be voted on yet. Don't forget that Uncle Teddy's plan is not completed yet. You remember him, the guy to introduce HMOs into law. After that fiasco there were lawsuit aafter lawsuit. First, he was for them before he was against them. I for one prefer HMOs. They accent health promotion and prevention and require accountability from the provider. They reduce indemnity costs that allow providers to order unneccessary tests to line their own pockets. The unknown fact is that you must offer an alternative plan if management is allowed a better plan. When people have a right to chose HMOs over other plans like PPOs, they base their decision on price not product and then complain over the services. Sounds like Adjustable Rate motrgage holders.
These are only proposals and so far have not encroached on civil liberties...YET! Once all of the proposals are in, Obama can veto any plan that contradicts his platform, if he has not changed his mind....like he has done with other things. His economic plan includes reairing hospital infrasructue...but most are privately owned and are not under government control....yet!

His proposal is probably the ranting and raving of an old and disgruntled man. HMOs created a plethora of litigation, so one can assume that all of the proposals will crewate a maelstrom of controversy in the legislation. Once the dust settles and only one plan comes the forefront, all stakeholders will have lobbyists on retainer to represent their interests. The faithbased providers will most likely threaten to close their doors. That will reduce accessibilty to healthcare and reduce quality. It will also reduce the ability of the US to advance treatment because of the reduction in nonprofit medical schools and university hospitals that conduct research. You see, the federal government pays for medical education in these institutions. Then you have the proprietery hospitals that operate in many of the southern and western states. They do not provide charity care and service the market that participate in their negotiated contracts or have medicare and medicaid. They also do not have to accept Medicare as payment in full. They accept Medicare but are not contracted medicare providers. They still bill for the unpaid balance. They are not university associated and do not participate in medical education.

Hi Sue!
HMOs have been around for decades, but came center spotlight with Kennedy in 1983. The intent was to reduce fee for service and gain control over spending through Medicare and The HMO Act of 1973. He than expanded the act in 1983 and then oppsed it in 2001. The entire program was an attempt at securing the financial future of Medicare. This was againattempted in in 1997, I have the specifics on my home computer. How many times are the Dems going to let this guy ruin the financial stability of Medicare (which is an oxymoron)? This led to billions of wasted dollars in litigation because people did not understand what they contracted for.
HMOs work when people understand them...and most insurance companies don't pay for the same services that HMOs limit. Not every headache requires a CT scan...but people demand it and sue for the right to do so, eventhough they contracted for sonservative medical practice.

I gag every time I hear "windfall profits tax." It is so disturbing. Health care is the greatest leg of our economy the Marxists desire to control. They will go in January with all barrels blazing to ram something through without any scrutiny. Tom Daschle has said as much in his little healthcare book. Behind all their smooth compassionate talk, the real agenda is about government control and domination.
