HOW ABOUT CLASSICAL STATIONS USING COUNTY-WESTERN ANNOUNCERS?

Billy. WRR suffers from monotone drone

Having subscribed to WRR for 40 years, though I was absent from Texas frequently, I, too, claim the right to protest the station's failure to maintain reasonable broadcast standards.

I concur with your evaluation emphatically.

I have found a comparable station only once, and i cannot remember where.

WRR must continue. Preservation of the Classical heritage is tenuous at best. With proper professional management, money should be no problem.

During a recent visit, I attended a Sunday concert at the Bass Hall in Fort Worth. The orchestra was excellent, but the conductor was only symbolic. When he attempted to address the audience with an unprepared musicological lecture, his lack of grace and dignity as well as
his language problems cooled whatever passion anyone might have possessed on arrival.

I heard the Dallas Symphony, though not at the Meyerson. It was very impressive. My perception of the management of the Meyerson was so different from that of Bass Hall.

Of more concern, however, was the unbalanced character of the audiences. The mean age of the ticket buyers was well above 60.

Apparently, both WRR and the public schools are failing to engage the young. What has happened? I remember the devotion of Ishtak Perleman and so many others to youth festivals and workshops.

The one bright discovery, moreover, was the phenominal youngsters in the music programs at TCU. Everyone on that faculty seems dedicated to attracting and developing young talent. i was particularly impressed with pianist Harold Martina's personal leadership. Faculty recitals at TCU are frequent and well performed.

Thanks.

What an interesting commentary!

Thanks for your swell additions to my post.

Bill Cherry. Inquiry...

By chance was the great golfer and gentleman, Don Cherry, on your family tree?

Don Cherry

Don Cherry was both a good Crosby-style singer ("Bands of Gold) and a superb golfer. And he married one of the Miss Americas.

But he wasn't kin to me.
