There is an old saw that states "all politics are local", it may be cliché but it is true. The Virginia primary you mention is relevant.

SE Va is dominated by shipbuilding, military and port industry.

Northern VA is very blue since it is the beltway people and in republican years is filled with democrat lobbyists and transplants from all over the country.

Western VA is mining interests and agriculture. Richmond is the Capitol and is a sharp divide between the conservative surrounding counties and the democrat influences of Richmond proper.

We are now officially a purple state. Obama was the big winner with more votes than all the republicans on the ballot. McCain needed the DC insiders and the democrats who gave us Webb and two Dem Governor in a row.

If McCain lost his war position he could easily win the democrat nomination. Sort of a reverse Reagan with McCain republicans giving him the slam-dunk. IMO.
