Another liberal lite, such as McCain, wouldn't change much.

You are right. Most Republicans had the reputation of smaller government and the Democrats were the opposite. For some reason, in the last decade the main difference between them disappeared. The party does need to have clear stands on the issues and that means smaller government and less taxes, to name of few..
