Is that the best Hitchens can do?

random chance?

When you mention "random chance" it becomes clear that you don't understand the basics of the theory of evolution. You don't have to agree with the theory, but in 2007 you should at least be familiar with it. Dawkin's "Climbing Mount Improbable" would be a good place to start. Here's Dawkins:

"Living complexity is indeed orders of magnitude too improbable to have come about by chance...

"Natural selection is quintessentially non-random... This one mistake underlies much of the sceptical backlash against evolution. Chance cannot explain life. Design is as bad an explanation as chance because it raises bigger questions than it answers. Evolution by natural selection is the only workable theory ..."

Best of luck!

As far as understanding the "basics of evolution" I think graduating magna cumlaude with a degree in Biological Science (including A's in Evolutionary and Molecular Biology) covers that base pretty well.
