Comment on: The Place Liberals Fear!

Do English Only Laws Equal Racism?

Hmm.

While I'm not entirely opposed to the idea that migrant workers should be required to speak the language of the country they work in, your overall tone is unpleasant and borderline facist.

Also.. America doesn't HAVE a great culture.

Also, your title, "Does English Only Laws Equal Racism?" is grammatically incorrect. "Do" is the correct term. Maybe you should learn the language before sermonizing others.

Thank you for the comment!

I am sorry if the message came across with the wrong tone. You bring up an interesting point, and as a liberal you base your comments off of misunderstandings. No, migrant workers should not have to learn the language; immigrants should. Their is a difference. I am a supporter of the Presidents documented migrant work force idea. I understand that many migrants are facing challenges in life and are in need of help. I am not opposed allowing them to work temporarily, in order to support their families back home. In the case of a documented migrant, it is the employers’ responsibility to learn English. Please reply with your thoughts.
p.s. Thank you for the grammar lesson. I will adjust the post accordingly!

English only

There are already 6 temporary work visas, including agricultural worker and skilled/unskilled worker. The U.S. does not need another temporary worker status. The Administration's proposal would create an underclass of non-citizens, much like as in Saudi Arabia, Germany, or France. Do we really want to follow in the non-citizen underclass system footsteps of these nations?

As regards English-only laws: I support English as an official language. Some States have made steps in this direction. Businesses should not be required to use only one language, or many languages: the government ought not be in the business of mandating good business practices. If a business wants to behave in such a manner to drive away potential customers, then that is their business. The free market will punish poor business practices and reward good business practices.

Further, foreign language classes in school tend to isolate those non-English speakers from success in America and discourage them from assimilating. English is the international language of business: foreign language classes cut off non-English speakers from that business.

Assimilation in America has traditionally meant that new Americans adapt to the dominant culture, but the dominant culture also absorbs elements of the culture of new Americans. American culture is give and take, in terms of assimilation. The basis for that assimilation has been the Anglo-Saxon legal code, the English language, and English anti-corruption, everything else is up for grabs.

Thank you for the comment!

I agree with some points you made, and feel you made a valid argument of the points I don't agree with. The only way I see the President’s documented migrant proposal creating a underclass would be if the American people reacted with racism. I understand that many of the Hispanic immigrants and migrants are coming to America to support their families. As a young father working and going to school, I can understand the desire to support my family. Some Americans don't feel the same way I do and react with hatred towards Hispanics because of perceived stereotypes.

Look, if a different system was in place for the migrant workers to come to America and work a summer/winter then I feel that the percentage of illegal immigrates in America would fall. Those migrant workers who wish to stay would be given precedence when it comes to becoming a citizen. With becoming a citizen they should have to learn English.

Yes, there are some systems already in place. Most American people don't know that. The way the President words his proposal is critical, and by saying it is a new program appeals to the unaware American people. Either way dusting the programs off or creating a new one would free up boarder patrol to stop the drug smugglers and terrorists that use our boarders.
