The Fragility of Faith

People always underestimate God

Einstein marveled at God's creation, but like many agnostics he missed God's greatest miracle of creation: free will. The reason is quite obvious to me: pride, refusing to acknowledge the existence of something that is (and always will be) beyond human understanding. The wonders of the physical world are, at least in principle, entirely accessible to our intellect. Thus, if the physical world is "all that there is," then human beings can hope to become omniscient -- even if this is only in principle and only collectively -- and so humanity can become "god." (In fact, we are already proto-god.) And if all our actions, thoughts, beliefs, etc. are deterministic, then we are also "sinless." And we remain sinless regardless of our behavior, so we can do whatever we want. We don't even have to worry about trying to want the right things, since our wants are just as deterministic as our actions.

People who espouse these beliefs think they are oh-so-modern, but in truth these ideas are literally as old as the hills. See Genesis 3.
