Deja Vu All Over Again

It is ironic that what was once liberal sounds more conservative than most conservatives today. How far we have come. Sadly, how far in the wrong direction.

Far more frightening, consider FDR's massive social programs, and compare them to policies proposed today, and you realize that the liberal icon would sound rather far to the right today. After all social security is means tested, requires a work history, and pays out based on income, that would be considered a reactionary plan today, so regressive even a Republican would not propose it.

Go back even farther and as recently as Grover Cleveland we had presidents who proposed things no one would consider today: gold money, real power to the states, reigning in the federal authorities, retirement of federally issues paper money...

Only a century has passed, but even the middle of the road positions of 1900 sounds so far right to today's listeners that they are unthinkable.

Quite sad when you stop to consider it.
